  • Summary: The Canadian electronic artist releases his follow-up to his Polaris Music Prize-winning album Andorra.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 29 out of 31
  2. Negative: 0 out of 31
  1. Not surprising, then, that his newest leap into club-inspired techno and house feels just as substantial and weighty as his previous forays into experimental pop.
  2. Swim finds Snaith diving back into pure sequencing, but the result is his strangest and gutsiest work yet.
  3. This is the third album in a row where Snaith seems to have devoted most of his effort into submerging his own unique voice deep within the musical persona he's adopted, I just don't really get what I'm supposed to do with it. Like, should we get him some water wings to keep his head above the water?

Score based on a live performance of this album in Shanghai 2010. These guys played like they are technical wizards solving a complex cosmic mathematical equation .. standing inside a clock ... in a science laboratory ... in the mind of a mad inventor ... who's tripping on acid. It was spellbinding. Expand

To be blunt, I'm disappointed with this record. Andorra really showed how unique Caribou was. That record gave me the sense that there wasn't anyone who could match the magical area that Dan Snaith occupied. However, almost all of Swim falls flat to me. It's almost like Dan was hanging out too much with Kieran Hebdan (Fourtet). In fact, Swim sounds like the tracks that didn’t make the cut for Kieran’s exceptional new Fourtet record. While there are a couple bright spots (I love the track "sun"), the rest of Swim sounds like someone just experimenting with mediocre house music and overlayering them with aimless samples that don't add anything. Maybe I hold Caribou to unattainable standards, and maybe Swim will grow on me, but so far no I'm not impressed. Expand
