Aug 27, 2021This album is absolutely brilliant. James McMurtry has hit a home run. 10 songs, each one a tour-de-force with lyrics that are pretty much unrivaled in terms of telling stories of substance that grab your attention and make you think. The accompanying tunes and singing and band and production are fantastic.

Aug 25, 2021McMurtry sounds more engaged here, more focused, and more generous to his hard-luck characters.

Aug 20, 2021His work is full of the messy energy and surprising turns of a life lived hard, and on The Horses and the Hounds, the music speaks as vividly as his excellent songs. Not many artists pushing 60 get to deliver as satisfying a breakthrough as this one.

Aug 18, 2021Here’s a motion to take “Canola Fields,” “Operation Never Mind,” “The Horses and the Hounds” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” with “Blackberry Winter” a close contender, into that hallowed group – top 30 or 40 of McMurtry’s best songs. The others on this album missing from this shortlist would be the envy of any other songwriter, a measure of McMurtry’s brilliance.
