Even if the primary common characteristic of this stuff is how exceedingly pleasant it all is, there's always a place for that, regardless of what month it is.
  2. Now, clearly, the group has momentum on their side and seems locked into a promising direction. On the strength of these six songs, it now seems fitting to resuscitate those declarations.

Its mischievous and fun with an undercurrent of sadness--definitely a charming release to add to their catalog.

As a stand-alone, six-set album, it compares just fine to last year's eight-set Pigeons and in many ways, is a detached piece on its own. With songs that are as refined and delicately composed as this, Here We Go Magic have already presented a strong catalog to take notice of.

There are still a couple of puzzling decisions--"Backwards Time" is such a pitch-perfect evocation of the Police that it's actually distracting--but The January EP succeeds where the other Here We Go Magic releases have mostly failed; instead of handing you a couple of shiny baubles, it provides you with an inviting headspace to fall into.

For the most part, though, Here We Go Magic congeals its ambient gushing into manageable streams, and January is prettier, catchier, and more intelligible as a result-less magical, perhaps, but more musical.

With The January EP, Here We Go Magic has found a way to mature their sound without abandoning its core elements.

Of the six songs, not a single one feels unfinished or thrown-away. The fourth track, "Hollywood," feels a bit thin, but only in comparison to the rich textures on either side.
