Critic score distribution:
  1. Positive: 8 out of 8
  2. Mixed: 0 out of 8
  3. Negative: 0 out of 8
  1. There's a great deal of variety to the record, something that sets them apart from the vast majority of the bands that pay homage to the '60s, but also something that keeps them from developing a distinct identity.
  2. Like Belle And Sebastian, one of the main weaknesses of the group is that they're just to darn precious at times for their own good.
  3. Filter

It's sleek and distinctly studio-based, with live instrumentation taking a backseat to plush soundscapes that could only come from some fancy knobwork. [#5, p.92]
  4. Unfortunately the band sometimes overdoes the sweetness and ends up being too precious.
  5. Magnet

The Long Goodbye is no cutesy, navel-gazing crap; it's the neglected pop practice of C-A-R-E and reverence of form and forefathers. [#59, p.93]
  6. Mojo
    80
    Sound[s] like a typical Elephant 6-related band--absolutely fantastic. [May 2003, p.108]
  7. As a transitory album The Long Goodbye is uneven.
