Somerset may be a little detached and introverted, but Waves Of Fury certainly are not and on this evidence, they can stand proudly with the county’s finest exports.

Although at times Thirst does a very good impression of perfect throwaway pop, it is just an impression.

Solid songwriting chops show a clear ambition on the band's part to be more than just another garage rock act, though the tunes are stronger in the second half of the record than the first.

Over 10 tracks and 31 minutes, Waves of Fury steadfastly maintain that balance between raw and catchy without ever going over the line in either direction, and the result is off-kilter and exciting.

Thirst is stylistically ambitious and often quite successful for a debut album, but while the rest of the ingredients are there, Carter Sharp needs to get his vocals whipped into shape before Waves of Fury can be as nasty as they want to be.
