Entertainment WeeklyMost of Treble & Tremble is about [Smith], making its early-morning melancholy and simple request to "take care of your heart" nothing short of gut-wrenching. [1 Oct 2004, p.74]
-
One of the best and most moving albums of the year.
-
Treble and Tremble showcases a full array of old-school remedies, from inventive mic'ing and overdubbing to brutal filters and bullhorn distortion a la Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. If Espinoza sang any better than he does, he'd probably be bored in the studio.
-
The style is, in fact, so far from themselves and close to Smith that I'm going to assume this is a one-off mourning effort. If it is, it's worthwhile for anyone moved by Smith's death; but if they make another, it'd be extremely blasphemous.
-
[Espinoza] takes the predictably disappointing low road through fanboyville with cruise-controlled caricatures of one of indie rock’s most deified stars.
-
Alternative PressSweet and insubstantial. [Nov 2004, p.140]
-
Espinoza opts for cheap sentiment beneath layers of grandiose atmospherics.
