Put simply, Vertikal is truly breathtaking. [26 Jan 2013, p.55]

The fact that after six full-length LPs Cult of Luna can still deliver an opus as challenging, engrossing and intricately layered as Vertikal is a testament to the abilities of this Swedish collective; a band who have now earned their place as one of the most essential in progressive metal.

This is music at a slow simmer, not a fast boil, and as such, takes time and patience to absorb. But the passion and intensity is undeniable.

The rub is that Cult of Luna do the 13-minute-song thing so well on their sixth album (which is about four hours long) it's scary.

Mirroring the Fritz Lang film's portrayal of man operating and essentially becoming a part of a machine, the Swedish band plays their instruments meticulously and repetitively.

    A dark, challenging album. [Feb 2013, p.107]

Dark, atmospheric, heavy. Massive riffs and phasing synth makes this a fully immersive album, which combines the best of crushing doom metal and effervescent ambience. Collapse
