VII, the debut studio album by Teyana Taylor, sees her trade in her tomboyish rap image for something more soft and sexy, and it shows on songs like Business, a throwback to 90's Genuwine. The album itself has that 90's feel to it, and layered with her smoky vocals it makes for an enjoyable listen. It is one of the must have albums of 2014.

Teyana Taylor proved that she was ready to make her own road in R&B Game, so iconic and pure her debut album, but I think that it deserved more than it received!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Ultimately, VII is a fine contemporary R&B album that captures the ups and downs of love. It doesn’t break new ground in the least, but continues to make this tried-and-true subject matter of R&B interesting and as always, relatable.

There's evidence that she has studied the classics, like the point in "Broken Hearted Girl" where she quotes Teena Marie, and the quietly dazzling, Janet Jackson-like way in which she conveys longing throughout "Request." At the same time, she leaves a mark of her own with this, one of 2014's superb debuts.

VII lacks his [Kanye West's] boundary-warping weirdness, but she has a strong grasp on lush '90s-kissed R&B.
