    It goes to show, scuzzy hooks will always be a way to make engaging music, even if the genre is well-worn. So, do yourselves a favor and check out We Are the Champions, an endlessly rewarding firecracker of an album.

    The secret weapon on their second album is an unironic embrace of the elegant, harmony-rich hooks and wide-eyed lyrics of rock forebears the Righteous Brothers, which gives the Orralls' blistering tunes their own earnest, romantic edge.

    Champions' appeal clearly isn't its originality, but its songwriting; on every track, JEFF The Brotherhood enters briskly, states its piece concisely, and gets the hell out before the rush wears off.

    The songs on Champions might not add up to the best record proper, but those guys in front of the stage probably could care less. They've got some more fuel for the party, and at the end of the day, that's all that really matters.

    While their DIY ethic is still firmly intact, they've started to evolve gracefully into pop craftsmen. A Brotherhood rock opera might still be a few years off, but a fast and furious album like We Are the Champions every couple of years should be more than enough to keep the fires blazing.

    The brothers have acid on the brain, stirring harmonized distortion and sitar buzz into the boogie. And they back up the balls of this album title: The Blue Cheer-with-Neu! surge of "Mellow Out" is fast bliss.

It's funny, they tour with Diarrhea Planet which has 4 guitars and a bass, yet Jake has a larger guitar sound (a la Fu Manchu). Great, great stuff. Would love to one day see them with their label mates Heavy Cream, also from Nashville. The latter clearly have been influenced by Jeff's sound. Hey Friend and Ripper are classics.… Collapse
