  1. Trouble is, despite the band's concerted efforts to beef up and broaden their schtick with a radio-friendly production, too many aspects scream "novelty act".

Faux-feminist tracks such as 'Dirty Mind' are more Austin Powers than Phil Spector, too self-conscious to hit the heart-bursting heights of the originals, too much a pastiche to forge anything new. [15 Jul 2006, p.37]

Though more than pastiche, it's not pop genius yet either. [Aug 2006, p.114]
  4. The Pipettes are only fresh in the sense that they've appropriated Spector-influenced girl-pop for a new era.

Bringing girl-group pop to the hearts of indie The single is great but unfortunately the most in-depth instrumentally the album ever becomes. Bringing girl-group pop to the hearts of indie fans is a great idea but they could have put a little more emphasis on better instrumentation and song structure. To stay true to pop music doesn't mean the Pipettes have to regurgitate the same song progressions. Hopefully, they will spend as much time developing the songs on their next album as they did developing their "cuteness" on this debut. Full Review »
