The ambitiousness, imagination and craftsmanship on display place Weightless in a class all of its own, stridently redefining the parameters of heavy music in 2011,. [Dec 2011, p.120]

By showcasing progressive metal in its truest, multi-dimensional form, it strides triumphant. [12 Nov 2011, p.54]
  3. Animals as Leaders have proven that they can rise above the trends that Tosin had a hand in creating, but have not done so perfectly.

Epic riffs play a bigger part than before, but Abasi is as jaw-dropping as ever with his double-tapping technique and arpeggiated whirlwind solos.

One thing I'd like to point out about the new album is that it was the first band effort for animals as leaders. their first album was written entirely by Tosin Abasi and produced by Misha Mansoor (Periphery;Bulb.) Weightless was also self-mixed with Navene Koperweis (the drummer; ex-Animosity) taking the helm. Koperweis adds so much to this album and you can tell. The drums maintain their technicality but add a bit of primal and a smidgen of electronica. It's a great direction for the band and I can't wait to hear what their next album has to offer. Expand

The same can be said for the other two members of the Abansi-led Animals as Leaders. There's a lot less guitar wankery and a greater electronic focus on the math-metal group's second release. Weightless feels just as techy as their debut album, but also a lot more focused and refined. Expand
