Starts poorly and improves after the dreadful first three tracks. Hits the hights with "Everything Goes". Good, uncomplicated pop in places; terrible, cloying, shallow pop in others.

Pathetic follow up. Not one catchy tune there. Really flat pop. Forgettable.

This is a very good album, a very good album indeed. The only bad thing I can think of is that its had to follow in Left Of The Middle's footsteps - otherwise, it would have received rapturous applause from those critics who seem to want a 'shock-of-the-new musical revolution' with every single album they review. The lyrics are spectacuar, possibly being more ambiguous yet multi-meaning then LOTM's. The song's are good, although the listing should have been re-diggled from the easy-to-big-to-easy it is. And listen you Gorillaz-loving reviewers, like this or... or... go eat something slimy. Now. I won't have a bad word said against Miss Imbruglia. She's gorgeous and talented and lovely and caring, and I think my review would have been the same even if she'd released and album of nursery rhymes. So, I guess I'm biased, but what the heck. GO BUY WHITE LILLIES ISLAND!!! Expand

Unbelievably bad. Boring. All the tracks sound the same. I liked her first album though.

Very good followup to her first. That Day and Wrong Impression are very catchy and caught my ear right away. The rest of the songs are very much matured from her first album and it shows. Very good album.

Dude!! This is probably the best work of Nat's yet. Especially "Hurricane," which is, in my mind, the best slow song ever made. :) Buy WLI! You'll love it! Ignore those critics... :) They don't know music.

A more introspective album than "Left Of The Middle." Natalie's voice is warm and clear. Good songwriting. My favorite songs are "Everything Goes" and "Hurricane". It's a solid CD.

A haunting CD that makes Natalie step out on her own more than Left Of The Middle did.

A really lovely album. Has yet to wear out its welcome after almost 4 years. Hope her new album is just as good!:)

Simply amazing. This is an album that grows on you. The critics obviously were quick to write Natalie off as a one hit wonder and did not listen to this disk properly. Criminally underrated. Beauty On The Fire is one of the finest songs ever made. Period.

Not as poor as critics will have you believe. There are a few songs that lack depth, but others ("Sunlight" being my favorite) that have an awful lot to offer. The sound is a nice balance between slick, layered production and Natalie's beautiful voice. Definitely satisfies when you're in the mood for some lighter pop.

The actual tunes may not be particularly strong, but crucially, at the centre of it all Natalie croons and sighs with all the clear-eyed moonfaced sweetness of Juliette Binoche baking cakes. [Dec 2001, p.116]
  2. One can sense that she has complete control, lyrically and musically.
  3. Despite Imbruglia's big, pouty voice, it's all perfectly pleasant and quickly forgotten.
