As the first Mario game in high definition, one can appreciate the additional view to the sides. Sometimes when running fast, it can be difficult to ascertain the appropriate time to counter an obstacle. The vibrant colors to the detailed character and background design, one would be remiss to omit the fact that this game looks spectacular. The symphonic music and sounds fit Super Mario Brothers perfectly. This game should be on a classic Super Mario Brothers fans must have list!
I'll give this game a 97%. Nintendo did an excellent job making this game compared to New Super Mario Bros. 2! not being that good of a Mario game in my opinion. This game is more similar to New Super Mario Bros Wii and brought back the Penguin Suit from that game. There are so many unique worlds to go to. Trying to collect star coins throughout the game is a blast! The Acorn suit is a great power-up to use and you can use it to help you collect star coins in certain places as well!
I was probably one of the first to get the game as I received it as a gift along with my new Wii U back in 2013. It's a great compilation and a great reason to pick up a console. Please note that if you want to see a separate review of both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, you'll need to check out my reviews on those pages.
New Super Mario Bros. U was a Wii U launch title that tried but didn't really use the GamePad well. Thankfully, it still has the genius level design like the rest of the New Super Mario series and cheerful art style that always keeps me coming back. One of the levels in Soda Jungle (styled like Van Gogh's Starry Night) is particularly beautiful.
The multiplayer from New Super Mario Bros. Wii is back and its as hectic as ever. It still doesn't really fit my definition of fun but I guess if you have nothing else to do, you should try it out. The Flying Squirrel Acorn is the new power-up in this game. It allows you glide and hang onto walls to hide from enemies. It's really unique and I'd like to see it return in a later Mario game.
Baby Yoshis also make a return. There are three types: bubble, light, and balloon. The bubble one, as you may have guessed, blows bubbles to trap enemies and turn them into coins. The light one can create a path for you in dark underground levels and the balloon one can help you get to higher places. The Baby Yoshis are a great addition to freshen up the gameplay. One of my few problems with Mario U is that when you get to World 6, there's an insane difficulty spike but that's mostly it.
New Super Luigi U was released as an add-on pack for Mario U but is now featured in this compilation as basically a side game. Mario is not in the game at all. Instead you be Luigi, who has his floaty and fluttery physics from Super Mario Bros. 2. It's the same style as Mario U but there's completely new levels and the game is much harder. In case you're not an expert and you're don't like hard things (like me), you can play as the invincible Nabbit.
In New Super Luigi U, you only have 100 seconds to complete the challenging levels featured in the game. This makes the game not suited for multiplayer at all and this is one of the few games where I definitely wouldn't recommend it. No, seriously. I'm not kidding. It doesn't really give you much time to explore the levels as you constantly feel rushed but the game's fine on its own.
Overall, New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U is a fantastic compilation that is now available separately. Together, the games are excellent and definitely worth a purchase.
Tons of excellent 2D platforming gameplay all on one disc. If you're thinking about getting either of the two games then this is the best way to do so. Nintendo was even nice enough to throw in some bonus videos. This is in my opinion the best way to experience both of these games. To learn more about why both games are awesome check out my individual reviews for them. This is an all around excellent package.
