Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. They're a small independent team of hardcore gamers based in New Zealand and have created Path of Exile as the game that they'd want to play themselves. It is designed around a strong barter-based online item economy, deep character customisation, competitive PvP and ladder races. The game is completely free and will never be "pay to win". "Hack’n Slay as its best. First you’ll think “this is just another diablo-copy”, but when you begin to get into the game deeper, you’ll be surprised. It has the most powerful and individual character-system you’ll ever see in an action-rpg so far. Moreover, all game-content is 100% free to play, no hidden “pay2win” in the shop." ... "I can't say what their future holds as I'm not much of an economist (nor am I really a magpie). But I can say I've had many, many hours of fun in a game that still has much more to show me and which all of us, right now, can play for nothing at all. We're being spoiled." ... Read full review

Path of Exile is AAA+ game FREE of charge. No pay to win. Grind to win!

The game is quite polished already future announcements make you connected to Wreaclast even more. Devs give their best, the rapport is great and from what i've seen in the past year the were 25+ patches, constant tweaking with the mechanics, skill tree* and skills.
Dedication is the way Grinding Gear works. They way they introduce changes clearly shows how they care.
*The sheer size of the skill tree is a guarantee jaw drop if seen for the first time

The game mechanics, leveling system, passive tree, and gem system is a huge breath of fresh air. The only thing I'm still getting used to is the currency system, but that comes with time, and a couple of YouTube videos, I guess. I'm glad the story has a gap (film term) because I really feel like I've been exiled and I have no idea what's going on. The story is not predictable for me. Graphics and music are awesome - diggin' the grittiness. Also, I think this is the only free to play I've actually enjoyed. I feel bad this is free because it's really good. Expand

I'm not talking about slickSince the first time I played this game in early beta, it felt like the game that Diablo 3 should have been. I'm not talking about slick graphics.. I'm talking about gameplay. The skill system. The item system. The level design. This game feels like the TRUE heir to the Diablo throne, not that bastardized half-wow monstrosity Blizzard churned out. POE is fun, exciting... and hell... even if you don't like it.. no harm done because it's FREE. Imagine that. A company makes an awesome game, listens to the community, and the game is free. Expand

But it is FREE (legit F2P), and equals Diablo 3 in quality in almost every way. Huge community, playerbase, and continued support makes you feel good about playing it. It was a lot of fun, and I'm sure I will return to it again, and again. Expand

I alsoI am a arpg-fan and started out playing Diablo 2 some years after release. Have also played quite a lot of Titan Quest and some others. I also played Diablo 3, but I never got hooked on it.

I think Path of Exile does a really good job as an arpg, better than Diablo 3. It's really fun to level up a character. The fights are fun, with a good variation of mobs, cool boss packs and plenty of good loot. The itemization is really good, with multiple properties being important and you regularily find a good item. For a noob to the game (it's pretty deep with loads of customization options), but familiar to the genre, the game is just hard enough. I died a couple of times and ran around like a headless chicken multiple times. Nothing is as fun as nearly dying, but getting away in a game like this.

Path of Exile got a lot of things right.

+ Very complex skill system with endless build possibilities.
+ Fluid combat and good controls.
+ Brings back the Diablo 2 atmosphere and gameplay.
+ Ladder system and fun challenges.
+ Good content updates.
+ Free to play, but not pay to win. Very fair and good shop system.

- Game mechanics are not explained at all. I didn't know about ascension until a player told me about it.
- The skill tree is often changed and reset. I don't wanna spend so much time thinking of a new build and re-allocating all the skills after every patch, on all my characters. The skill system is too complex for that. Suggestion: Mark the skills the player had before the reset to make it easier.
- You need to trade for end game content (maps) which is kinda annoying. Can't just jump into the game and play - at least if you want to progress.

-- Damage reflect mechanic. If you put this in your game, you're an id*ot. Plain and simple.
-- Microtransactions are way too expensive. 15$ for a skin or stash tab is mental and getting just the essentials that you need to enjoy the game will actually cost you more than a full price game.
-- They are clearly creating collectors items with the intention of selling more overpriced stash tabs. The gameplay is suffering from all the collection crap. It's too much.
-- The game is anti social. Parties are unplayable due to lag (regions are mixed, so EU players end up in Australian parties with 500 ping), too many effects on screen (you can't see what's happening) and the fact that you need to keep up with the best player to get experience. The result is that 5 people run behind one guy who kills everything as the screen explodes, and try not to die. No fun at all.

These last few points have a major impact and prevent a better rating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I used to like this game.

A long time ago, in a world slightly less crazy than our good ol' 2020, this game wanted to do what Diablol did not do. People were starting to get pissy with Blizzard for some of their D3 shenanigans, and rightfully so. This game promised depth, a vast end game, and massive customization. It delivered, was free, and had no loot boxes or p2w mechanics.

It's 2020 now. Some *brilliant* person at GGG decided to sell out to Tencent. Now the game feels like a vast wasteland. We still don't have trade improvements, everything destroys your character to encourage you to grind much, MUCH more to actually get anywhere, there's too many outdated league mechanics bogging down the game and forcing you to buy stash tabs to be competitive, the devs SUCK at making the game fun anymore (I'm looking at you, Sirius the Dankener), and in place of any positive aspect, we got loot boxes. Yay, we got loot boxes!

Good luck with your "new" PoE without a new Diablo to rip off of. I can't wait to see all the cosmetic options funneling money to China.
