The Ascent provides you with a unique opportunity to visit the not-so-distant dystopic future of our world in an action-packed manner and also in a graphically astonishing way. Its various possibilities of character creation allow for a unique playthrough and replayablity.

The Ascent's interconnected world, world-building, and exciting combat make it a pleasant surprise, and one of our favourite titles of 2021 so far.

If you don’t feel a desperate need of sinking teeth into a new game, it could be wise to wait some more time before starting The Ascent. I’m certain the devs will support this title for many months to come, addressing it’s most urgent issues, i.e. stiff difficulty level, poorly implemented fast travel or lack of endgame (including insufficient depth of itemization). Before the end of the quarter, the game could be upgraded enough to deserve a score like 8.5, and in the long term, I can imagine it ascending even higher. But can you resist these graphics?
  4. Despite its stylishly designed atmosphere and graphics, The Ascent can distract the player with numerous optimization problems.

A twin-stick shooter that looks and feels great all the way through, but doesn't do enough new to keep your attention as you invest more time in its RPG systems and world.

Despite difficulty spikes and a few odd design choices, The Ascent is an enjoyable, and gorgeous, sci-fi blaster.

Dashing from cover to cover while peppering enemies with bullets and lasers as you wait on cooldowns to reset is a truly exhilarating and tense moment The Ascent offers time and time again. Those moments are memorable and are unfortunately far less common than The Ascent’s pitfalls. I’m right near the end of the game’s main story after crossing off plenty of side missions, but with the charm of The Ascent’s firefights and scenery long since expired, there’s nothing much left to inspire confidence in what remains.

It reminds me of Syndicate Wars (1996), which I loved as a teenager.

The locations, enemies etc. are all really well made and the sound design and music is especially good. The game is also fairly challenging, which I appreciated. Highly recommended!

You got bugged keybinds, weapon skins and stuff just disappearing from your inventory, enemy NPCs being multiplied when you first meet them, including game bosses. Also the game presents a lot of stuttering when explosions happen.

Ok, now about the content. This game is NOT and RPG. You can kick and scream all you want, but it's not a real RPG, it's just a top-down shooter with some minor RPG elements. If you think this game is an RPG, then you probably think Farcry 3 is an RPG too, so I don't know what to tell you.
The RPG elements refer only to character creation and the barebones stat allocation system upon leveling up.
There are no expansive dialogues, no multiple ways to solve a quest, no changes to the world depending on your choices, no relationships with certain characters, no followers, nothing that makes an RPG what it is.
The NPCs are also extremely forgettable.

Also this is not a Diablo-like game either. The item drops are very scarce and they don't have randomized stats and qualities. The only thing random about the loot is which NPC will drop that standard gun or armor that all the shops in the game have. Although you can upgrade weapons to epic quality, using a currency in the game.
Also there are some secret special weapon locations, that give you some stronger than average weapons.

The game world is absolutely insanely detailed. There was a whole lot of attention put in creating the backgrounds, perhaps too much. Every backdrop is incredibly detailed and atmospheric.
The sound is right on point as well.
The story is serviceble, it won't blow your mind but it's not stupid either.

All in all, this is most definitely above average for an indie game and you should totally get it.

PS: Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but considering this is "current year" and the country of origin for the developers, it seems someone went out of their way to avoid any R34 content. The NPCs are...pretty damn ugly to say the least, even Kira, the only NPC who was interesting enough to probably inspire such material, looks like wearing a sumo costume.

It doesn't deserve the praise it's gotten. It crashes constantly, the gameplay and progression is more shallow then a wading pool and the story is the laziest most predictable pieces of Pablum I've seen in ages. The best thing I can say about it is it looks pretty and some of the voice acting is good. Development team also supported the game with plenty of free cosmetic DLC. But don't believe the hype! You'd be better off playing Path of Exile, Diablo 3, Torchlight or hell I'm gonna say it! I had more fun hate playing Diablo: Immortal for 4 hours then the 20 i sank into this. Expand
