Toukiden 2 is a great leap towards a much-needed evolution, and it dares to add new things and challenge tradition. Hunting games usually get an enhanced edition that adds all kinds of stuff and I eagerly await what Omega Force will bring on next time around. In the mean time, I’m gonna play more of this game for a few dozen more hours.
Toukiden 2 is packed with new concepts, battle mechanics, an open-world and an evolved application of previously existing elements that both fans and newcomers to the franchise will be spoiled with and enjoy.

For me the best alternative to Monster Hunter. It improved my main complaints of the prequel while also keeping the strengths of it. Toukiden is set in an alternate universe Japan. Since ancient times a secret group called Slayers protects mankind from the threat of Oni. Oni are beings that life in another kind of space time and consume souls. They can enter our world with some kind of shenanigans (needs souls and they create a kind of body to use in our world if I understand it correctly) and if left uncontrolled warp our space time to something humans cant survive. In the past an event named “The Awakening” happen which was a massive onslaught of Oni. All Slayers could barely prevent mankind's destruction and are confined in the remaining parts of Japan not warped by the Oni. It is a constant struggle for survival. The main story is set 2 years after the events of Toukiden Kiwami. Your newly created hero is fighting in the beginning of what will later be known as “The Awakening” when he is mysteriously transferred forward in time. So begins an entertaining story. It focused on inner conflicts of a Village at the borders to the Oni territory, some political plots or schemes and characters backstories. Each character has his own story arc and carries his/her burden. Often they were not strong enough in the past or made mistakes that can not be corrected. It uses the Monster Hunter formula as you hunt different sized Oni (Medium size is new). You don't level up and your strength lies in your equipment and Mitamas. (Spirits of fallen Heroes, Monks, Spiritualist or Mythological beings of Japanese culture). These are also divided in multiple roles which adapt to different play styles (Defence for example gives you a small shield). These level up and learn new abilities or improvements (Active abilties must be equipped as you are limited). You created better equipment from loot that is obtained from Oni or found. There are multiple weapons with different play styles. Here whips and sword / shield styles are added. I used mostly the twin blades (very fast attack speed), Katana (Slower but stronger) and gloves (Slow but powerful). Other additions are now a complete overworld and the “Demon Hand” item that can be used for transport or attacking. Technically / visually the game looks great. The Oni look amazing especially the bigger ones (I would buy an artbook). The music is atmospheric. A complaint by many was that the prequel was to easy. Here you can increase the difficulty to your hearts content (also get better loot and with this better equipment). The content is easily enough for 50-100 hours or more. Overall this is an excellent alternative to Monster Hunter and was fully worth my time and money.

I started playing this game and it got me hooked up right away. Check out the characters they are amazing.. omg professor is freaking beautiful

Toukiden 2 is a cool game in the vein of Monster Hunter or Soul Sacrifice. What's important is that this game offers more than just hunting - an open world with side quests. Fighting and exploration coexist well, and the end result is a game worthy of your attention. But it could have been prettier.
Minor annoyances aside, Toukiden 2 has some truly addictive gameplay and tonnes of content to chew through. The game's dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore. Meanwhile, the battle system is satisfyingly fast paced, and nothing quite compares to the power trip of ripping off the body parts of a giant demon.
What seems at first glance like a fairly standard genre game, Toukiden 2 ultimately offers an interesting setting, imaginative creature designs, story- and exploration-driven gameplay, and unique combat elements. While its flaws are obvious, it’s not hard to forgive them when you’re in the heat of battle, chopping off a hellish spider-demon’s legs one by one and watching its life force disappear with every slash, shot, and punch.
Adding a true open world to the Monster Hunter formula works just as well as you’d expect, even if this sequel is still a long way from perfecting the concept.
Toukiden 2 could have been a fair game, if only it weren't so visually ugly and so absolutely not user friendly.

this game series has come a long way and this one proves it can evolve. I can say this game has been a good experience on ps4 and pc well done koei!! definitely a must play

Like Reading a Book
In Toukiden 2 you create your characters and play as a slayer
You get zapped 10 years into the future and you lose all of your memories…
This game has a decent cast of characters but I quickly lost interest because of how much reading there actually is here..
This is a port from japan... there are no English dubs here, so it’s going to be hard for anyone that doesn’t speak Japanese to really enjoy this game…
The lack of English dubs is really prevalent during battles and tutorials…
The game is trying to tell you how to play as you play…
Very easy to die and take damage while you’re trying to read the paragraph of text... try to comprehend the system the game is trying to teach all while fighting enemies…
This is an open world hack and slash game…
You get materials around the world to craft better weapons and armor while you complete the various tasks from the village you’re living in…
The game slowly introduces new mechanics…
in addition to just being a straight up hack and slash game..
you’re introduced to a demon hand/claw move that you use to pull yourself into enemies, pull off special tasks, and proceed though areas in this open world…
You’ll also every once in a while get tasked with taking out an oni.. hunting it down in a shallow witcher 3 style of just following its tracks and take it out by cutting off different botty parts and weakening it…
there is no health gage on enemies though so boss battles can definitely feel like a grind…
Even with your party of 4 members that do great at holding their own…
But you’re rewarded with new mitama each time, which are essentially stat boost cards that add new perks and abilities to your character but at a cost…
such as your health gradually decreasing when a bonus is active…
Unfortunately the rest of the game feels just as grindy as these boss battles…
mostly because of the lack of English dubs…
You basically go to a spot on the map, return, read a harry potter book, go to another spot on the map to hunt down a giant oni.. Return

rinse and repeat...
There’s an unbearable amount of reading here…
after 3 hours of reading I was completely over the story and just started skipping through to the gameplay…
Which again... isn’t that great either…
The world is beautiful at times and fun to explore, but there are very brief moments of battle sandwiched in between a book.
Toukiden 2 is an okay game.
If you like reading more than you like playing…

This game fails hard trying to copy the Monster Hunter Formula.
Also graphics are dated, bad quality gameplay.
They were afraid to risk doing something amazing, and stoped on mediocre.

Great title with tons of replay value and lots of fun bosses that is pretty much essential if you enjoy hunting games. Gets zero stars though because Tecmo-Koei are insufferable tools that insist on disabling external music and Spotify in every one of their releases. Every single moment that Toukiden 2 is running is considered a "blocked scene" just to make sure that players cannot listen to their own music. It's beyond trash ordinarily, but the fact that this a game in a genre which requires hundreds of hours of heavy grinding makes it unforgivable. If they ever update their game and fix this crap I will update my score. Until then, I've got nothing but a huge middle finger for Tecmo-Koei and every other dev that tries to pull this stupid BS. I will never understand why Sony even allows it in the first place.
