If you’re someone who finds reward in developing deep mechanical understanding in games and is willing to die, a lot, in a bleak and uncaring world in pursuit of this understanding, Dark Souls Remastered could be a new favourite.

Dark Souls on Switch was another chance for me to fall in love with the world of Lordran once more. It's an experience that's a perfect fit on a handheld, and it's one of the most compelling apps Nintendo's burgeoning platform currently has to offer.

Dark Souls: Remastered is the improved version of one of the most influential and unforgettable games ever made. It delivers a mysterious and expansive world to be explored, which will reward with many wonders those who brave enough to face its dangers.

While Dark Souls Remastered on Switch possesses some odd quirks and isn't as technically impressive as its current-gen counterparts, it still retains the heart of what the original game is all about.

A well aged fantasy/horror action RPG, that even those who have never played before should definitely give a chance. Don't be scared off by the stories of how difficult it is. (Though also know, those stories are true.)

Seven years out from its first release, people already know what Dark Souls is all about and probably know whether that type of brutal gameplay is for them. Love it or hate it, it is what it is. The Switch version doesn’t change that experience. It does run extremely well on the system, and it looks pretty darn good. The failure to adhere to Nintendo button conventions isn’t exactly exclusive to Dark Souls: Remastered either, but it doesn’t make it any less of an annoyance. Other than that, there isn’t much else going wrong.

It’s another edition of the same old thing. One that has nothing to offer apart from what should be offered in the least – and still doesn’t accomplish it well enough to be worthy of any praise. [13/2018, p.76]

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a Japanese interpretation of a western RPG; the lore is deep, the characters are interesting, the game is Difficult but Fair (most of the time) challenges: and the story is woven its narrative through mostly item descriptions, gameplay, level design, enemies, and bosses. One of the best RPGs from Japan; (and no, it's not considered a JRPG); it's amazing! There are some issues with the game that doesn't make the game bad, but still, The combat is clunky and jinky, some of the enemies and bosses areas are too small for your character to roll safely so, you have to use your shield in these areas; some of the bosses themselves have cheap tactics, there is still some old bugs in the game and some new ones as well, and the game has bad and broken net code that ascended to Omni-broken; DARK SOULS is the vivec of bad net code and Janke PVP a term coined by InfernoPlus and another stuff for the Switch version such as the same graphics as the original PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release, and more; but yeah it is still a great game and an amazing experience. Stop thinking. Get this. Experience it. Let it destroy you and rebuild you into a gamer masterpiece. The game of the decade. Hands down.Stop thinking. Get this. Experience it. Let it destroy you and rebuild you into a gamer masterpiece. The game of the decade. Hands down. Inspired more games than any other by far. From salt and sanctuary. Hollowknight and deadcells, to starwars fallen order, surge, remnant of ashes and so many more that flat out ripped it off.. Literally made a genre "souls-like" and a meme where anything difficult is the "dark souls of " Also arguably among the best games ever made. Takes a sec to get into I wont lie. Take ur time. Play smart. You'll get into itm plays perfect on switch. So darksouls handheld? I will take it all. Cannot WAIT for a darksouls 3 port. Expand

Especially whilst playing handheld, the game performs well and I found myself only becoming frustrated due to my own lack of patience. I never feel like I am battling poor controls, hitboxes, or poor game design. Easily a quality title for the Nintendo Switch. Expand

Graphics and performance are significantly upgraded from the PS3 version. However there is one massive issue with this port that may very well completely ruin the experience for some players:
THE AUDIO HAS BEEN COMPRESSED TO HELL AND BACK.
Seriously, depending on the sound system you are using the game can sound absolutely dreadfull.
It's fine if you use the internal speakers of the Switch, or maybe if you use cheap headphones.
But try playing it on TV with a good sound system or try using good headphones: it will sound really really bad.
I can only assume that this was done to fit the game on a cheap 4gb cartridge. But then they didn't even decide to make the proper audio files available as a download.
All in all this really hurts the experience of playing an otherwise fantastic game.

They took the greatest game of all time, changed almost nothing, rereleased it and slapped "remastered" on it. THIS GAME IS NOT A REMASTER. ITThey took the greatest game of all time, changed almost nothing, rereleased it and slapped "remastered" on it. THIS GAME IS NOT A REMASTER. IT IS LITERALLY ALMOST IDENTICAL TO THE ORIGINAL GAME. F*** whoever was responsible for this. You could have made an actual remaster which this game sorely needs, but instead you just ruined our chances of ever getting a proper remaster. F*** you.
