This may not be her best work, but this is definitely an essential taylor swift album. This is her first pop album and it's admirable how she changed her sound knowing her audiences were country song enthusiasts. I think it's important for artists to be brave and explore more and more. Don't get lost in your comfort zone.

Reviewers continue to score her in the 70's range on Metacritic for the simple reason that she's Taylor Swift. 1989 and is a pop classic and there's a reason it won album of the year. Who else ever went so seamlessly from country to pop? "Shake it Off", "Blank Space", and "Style" are instant classics. Taylor deserves so much more praise for her talent than she gets.

Swift proved with this masterwork that not only could she do pop, but that she could do pop better than her contemporaries. From start to finish, the album raised the bar for pop music in the subsequent years, and proved that Swift’s experimentation (and risk-taking) had truly paid off.

Taylor Swift is a performer that I vehemently refused to listen to, but due to the inclusion of her 2015 album ‘1989’ in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (and my wish to listen to all of them) I had no choice but to pop it on my iPod.

Taylor Swift is a performer that I vehemently refused to listen to, but due to the inclusion of her 2015 album ‘1989’ in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (and my wish to listen to all of them) I had no choice but to pop it on my iPod.

Honestly? It wasn’t so bad. Opener ‘Welcome to New York’ takes a few listens to properly get into, but it’s definitely a song which feels weaker than the rest since it doesn’t really go anywhere. This is immediately followed by my personal favourite ‘Blank Space’ – a splendid piece of self-depreciation on Swift’s well reported romances, and if there’s one thing I appreciate in an artist it’s the ability to not take themselves too seriously. ‘Out of the Woods’ is the best song on the record, in fact it’s the only song on the album that I feel could have actually come out of 1989, whilst ‘Wildest Dreams’ and closer ‘Clean’ are two of the slower tracks (also the only ones that avoid suffering from overproduction – more on that later). ‘Bad Blood’ is, lyrically at least, the worst song on the record. Check out the version released as a single featuring Kendrick Lamar – his cameo alone makes the song so much better.

The biggest issue I have is the overproduction of the record; I’m aware that this is a modern pop record, but they could hold back at least (‘This Love’ is a prime example, starting off as a stripped down ballad but then employs an unnecessary synth line in there – had it been performed with some restraint and not in the style of something akin to dubstep I wouldn’t have minded).

So what can I say? It’s an album I had low expectations for but it surprised me, I enjoyed it far more than I should have but I still have issues with it. Did it deserve to beat Kendrick Lamar at the Grammys? Did it deserve a place in 1001 Albums over To Pimp A Butterfly? No, I think my life would have been the same even without listening to this. But hey, at least it was fun.

Her best album yet. By far, the biggest pop album from the 2010's. Proved her amazing capability of understanding the market and undeniably marked our generation stylewise, sonicly and emotionally.

"1989" is overrated. There is nothing special about this album. "Blank Space" is the only song that shines. It's more like 5.5 for me, but 6 is fine. I think that is her best album and this score tells that i don't like her.

Taylor loses her shine in this pop record. The melodies on the album aren't as cohesive or as impactful as her previous efforts and her lyricism and vocals are lost behind blistering pop productions.

First time I heard the album, I thought maybe she's trying too hard, but after some time I began to feel in the same place as her, understanding her side and her histories. Now I can only say that I love this album.

Sorry but this album sucks in the worst way ever! I cannot imagine how bad this album is! Except for Out Of The Woods, I don't find any songs in this album worth a listen.

If there is to be a defined list of album which everyone should listen to before they die- THIS ALBUM WOULD BE AT THE TOP! Many people were sceptical when they heard Shake It Off. Taylor had gone from country to pop. But that is not a bad thing. Beyoncé went from making radio friendly Pop/R&B hits to making a somewhat Alternative/Soul piece of work. Yet everyone still loves her. Shake ItIf there is to be a defined list of album which everyone should listen to before they die- THIS ALBUM WOULD BE AT THE TOP! Beyoncé went from making radio friendly Pop/R&B hits to making a somewhat Alternative/Soul piece of work. Yet everyone still loves her. Shake It Off is such an uplifting and inspiring song in the sense that we must not let bullies get to us. To summarise this album in one word would be reinvention. This shown from the album opener Welcome To New York which is all about starting life in the big city to New Romantics- an anthem to which EVERYONE can embrace themselves. The album itself is timeless, but a particular stand-out track would be Blank Space. It was this track which made the undeniably talented Swift the credential of being the first female artist to replace herself upon the Billboard Hot 100, as well as giving her biggest seller and having the quickest amount of views to 1,000,000,000 for a music video for a female artist (prior to Adele's Hello). The song is all about putting atrocious rumours to bed by feeding them with their own pills. All in all this album is flawless. It is very rare to find a flawless album (which is not Swift's). The last was Gaga's The Fame Monster in 2009, and it has taken 3 years for Dua Lipa to create another flawless album with her debut. TAYLOR WE LOVE YOU!!! Expand

Probably one of Ms. Swift's finest works. She just keeps re-defining herself, and this is just a proof of how she manages herself and works.

Expand

With 1989 she has succeeded in leveraging the most cordial and familiar of pop music outpourings to something that feels like a statement, a work of note and the sinew of some kind of emotional connective tissue–binding tastemakers, rock critics, guys I work with and my 12 year old cousin; irrevocably and unexpectedly.

What stands out more than the production is how consistently solid the album is, and how effective the lyrics and songwriting.
