What I find particularly egregious about this album is its stale, braggadocios lyrical content. Despite being well-produced, most of its songs' melodies have little sonic variation between them. The only songs on this album I consider good are Wanna Be Loved, due in large part to JID's verse on it, and Survivors Guilt. But even then, they aren't songs that I would come back to listen to.

“2000” is very much worth celebrating. Much of the production is handled by Statik Selektah, now a veteran with a strong reputation who regularly works with Joey and it’s his sample-flipping in particular that makes this album stand out.

Although 2000 can’t compete with Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp a Butterfly, or even Joey’s own AMERICAN BADA$$, it does highlight a major issue in contemporary American societies: gun violence. ... If anything, the album proves his chops were never rusty.

The album is emotionally mature beyond his years, and like 1999, it is a gateway to hip-hop sounds of the past while looking to the future, making for a project that shouldn't be skipped this year.
