With ‘23’ Cench truly puts his name at the top of the leaderboard. The ear for production, vulnerability, braggadocio, and likability make him one of the UK’s premier artists, not just in drill or rap but UK music as a whole.

23 also displays how good Central Cee is at the business of making records, not just writing. There are a lot of really strong musical ideas on display, some of which are the work of producer Young Chencs.

As the new face of drill music, “from Bush to Beverley Hills”, ‘23’ shows that Cench repeatedly proves his worth and as his talent continues to blossom.

His identity is in constant flux, making for a revealing and honest listen from one of the most-hyped artists of 2022 so far.

Standout tracks on the mixtape include the fan-favourite “Obsessed With You”, using the queen of viral short-songs PinkPantheress’ “Just For Me”, and the more introspective “Cold Shoulder”, but the last two tracks demonstrate just how much potential we are yet to see from Central Cee.

The attempt to incorporate other European rappers on 'Eurovision' is an interesting effort, but unfortunately, it doesn't quite hit the mark in my opinion and instead comes across as disorganized and chaotic despite a being a rich and rare collaboration. The track 'Lil Bro' is a mixed bag, managing to be both touching and somewhat pitiable. It's a testament to Central Cee's emotive delivery, but at times, the sentiment can veer into the realm of self-pity.

The production quality throughout the mixtape is undoubtedly a highlight. The beats are consistently great and provide a solid foundation for Central Cee's lyrical delivery. Fortunately, '23' is not solely focused on braggadocio. The mixtape offers a handful of introspective tracks that complement Central Cee's more assertive work. Lastly, a special nod goes to Dave for his contributions, particularly the piano work and well-executed beat switches on the final track, 'End of the Beginning.' These elements give the mixtape a strong finish and leave a lasting impression.

In conclusion, the mixtape '23' by Central Cee presents a solid start and strong production, but hindered by rushed segments and unfulfilled collaborative efforts. Central Cee's potential shines through, particularly in more introspective moments.
