    Listening closely to A Small Death all the way through is like watching a melodramatic foreign movie; spellbinding and deliberately paced with an ambiance that leaves you reflective but anticipating better times are (hopefully) ahead.

    The last few years have seen the genre of indie folk really come towards the mainstream, culminating in Taylor Swift taking it on in 2020.The last few years have seen the genre of indie folk really come towards the mainstream, culminating in Taylor Swift taking it on in 2020. I've not heard Crain's other albums but got this based on a recommendation by a friend. Lyrically excellent with some nice subtle production helping the songs stand apart from the glut in this genre. More than anyone else, this reminded me somewhat of a lower fi, less pop relation of Sharon Van Etten's last record "Remember Me Tomorrow. "Little Bits", "Past Time" and the tribute to Radiohead's "Just" in "Garden Dove" rank amongst the immediate highlights but this is an album that rewards those willing to hang around past the immediate tracks. I see myself revisiting this collection of melodies many times in the future.… Expand
