  1. Overall, About To Die isn't particularly great. The EP is quite unnecessary.

Though the production value is still high, the songs found here are less assertive than the tracks that were considered album material.
  3. 70
The LP succeeded such that this set doesn't outshine its older sibling, but it certainly acts as a logical and warm companion, something that Longstreth seems to be insisting upon throughout.

The arresting gorgeous title tune here destroys everything else, of course. But the rest have a loose, jammy feel that wouldn't have been tolerable in any phase of the DP's career other than the pop one. [No. 94, p.53]
  5. Nov 12, 2012
About to Die manages not only to seem vital in comparison to the other Dirty Projectors' art projects of this year, but also stirs hunger for the 25 other songs from these sessions that will hopefully see an eventual release.
  6. Nov 12, 2012
This is a cherry on a cupcake.
  7. Dec 14, 2012
About to Die offers a tight, effective encore for Magellan.
  8. Dec 20, 2012
There's a tender simplicity to the group's work in the last year that's in stark contrast to earlier records such as Bitte Orca.

As a DP obsessee I have to review it and say, basically it's Swing Lo Magellen but it deserves a 100% because it was still everything you could have asked for in a DP release. Okay! Full Review »
