Feb 15, 2011All Day offers a departure of sorts from Night Ripper and Feed the Animals, his previous releases. The composition of those two essentially follow the same furious blueprint, whereas All Day allows the musical ideas a bit more time to breathe and evolve.
-
Jan 18, 2011Gillis's vision becomes less orgiastic and more humanistic.
-
Jan 13, 2011Those who weren't sold on Gillis' act before aren't going to change their minds, but his records are consistently great, and All Day is no exception.
-
Dec 21, 2010The real enjoyment of any Girl Talk album stems from picking out the first hint of a song, mentally scanning your iTunes and figuring out what it is in time to fully enjoy it before it's gone. Or, you could also just stop thinking and enjoy all of it.
-
Dec 21, 2010All Day is just a refinement of Gillis' technique. The samples are somehow more karaoke-machine-universal than ever.
-
Dec 17, 2010For the uninitiated though, this is essential listening for any member of the iTunes set; crafting your next playlist will likely turn into a transcendental experience after you hear how uncannily Drake goes along with Flock of Seagulls.
-
Dec 17, 2010He always finds weird new emotional nuances in the samples.
-
Dec 14, 2010All Day is blessed with some of the most dazzling mash-ups ever to infringe copyright, but an overwhelming majority of these emerge during the first 15 minutes, and the hour of music that follows rarely reaches the opening salvo's dizzying heights.
-
Dec 14, 2010Sublime production quality and danceability aside, this mix scores as a chronicle of American pop music that elicits a dual layer of nostalgia: the first for the sampled songs themselves, the second for the thrill of the novelty of early mash-ups.
-
Dec 14, 2010Frustrated fanboy headscratching aside, the point is simple: All Day is a misstep of the worst kind, wherein Gillis' craft devolves from transformative to parasitic.
-
Dec 14, 2010All Day is too playful to be considered mature, but for the first time it feels like a consistent album and there are definite signs of Girl Talk maturing as an artist. Above all, it's a whole lot of fun.
-
Dec 14, 2010Depending on your susceptibility to this cut-and-paste style (and probably your age), it could be either the best thing, or the worst, you've heard all year.
-
Dec 14, 2010All Day is Girl Talk's cleanest album in that sense. Pitch disagreements are virtually non-existent, and save for one ill-advised Creep mash-up, it's as close to perfect as he can possibly get.
-
Dec 14, 2010All Day is a more complicated mix than Girl Talk's previous albums, with more to notice on repeat listens. And just like everything else he's done, it's an exhausting experience.
-
Dec 14, 2010All Day provides the soundtrack to the ultimate dance party, urging us to scream out the songs we know and to just have fun. It's nothing new for Girl Talk, really, but then again, what is?
-
Dec 14, 2010Against those odds, Gillis turns these perceived weaknesses into strengths; as his most fussed-over and carefully plotted album, All Day paradoxically sounds like his most effortless.
-
Dec 14, 2010Gillis seems less frenetic on All Day, less possessed by a manifesto of cramming as many samples into as small as space as possible. This decision could've been interesting, allowing his work to breathe and really let the considerable hooks sink in. However, most of the (comparatively-we're still talking sixty-to-ninety second bursts, here) longer mash-ups lose their novelty quickly and end up plodding along.
