  • Summary: The dozen tracks (ten written by Knopfler, two by Harris) on the pair's first collaboration were recorded over a seven-year span.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 3 out of 12
  2. Negative: 0 out of 12
  1. The two couldn't be more at odds vocally, but Knopfler's laconic drawl is like an easy chair for Harris' fluid pipes.
  2. For a better taste of Harris' harmonizing abilities, try her recent collaborations with young'uns like Bright Eyes and Ryan Adams.

The tension between their vocal personas--she's ever hopeful, he's relentlessly glum--is the highlight. [21 Apr 2006, p.73]

It's got some fine, graceful tunes. [May 2006, p.128]
  5. An elegant, sometimes sleepy collection.

All The Roadrunning isn't quite the success they would have hoped. The problem, perversely enough, lies in the disparity of voices. [May 2006, p.126]
  7. Although Harris does her best with some tasteful harmonies to save the session from the usual Knopfler over-egging, there's only so much she can do.

Their concert is also one of the best I have seen in a while. They were just in Washington, DC and they had the crowd on their feet screaming and yelling for more and together they are amazing. Both Emmylou and Knopfler are so talented, their voices, music, arrangements, etc. I hope they hook up again and do more. Just look at the RollingStone top sellers on their list for recording artist today and it's enough to make you want to scream! Most of those artist are so bad. Most of the young recording artist today are not even real musicians! Catch Emmylou and Knopler's gig if you can--you will not be disappointed. Expand

I'm not really a country music fan, but Knopfler and Harris have put together a "feel good"--touch of country album. Knopfler plays his guitar with so much feeling. Get in you car. Put the top down. Turn the music up and go for a cruise through the countryside. You'll feel refreshed. Expand

Get a nice glass of good wine...sit in the easy chair and let it flow into your ears. I first heard them perfom a song on IMUS. I don't usually buy CD's but I went out and found this one as soon as I heard it was released... I find different nuances each time I listen. Maybe recording over a long period of time isn't such a bad idea! A+++ Expand

Knopfler has lyrically been at his most poetic on his previous three albums (Shangri'La, Ragpickers Dream, and Sailing To Philadelphia), so the pedestrian nature of much of the material was a real let-down. So that when Emmy-Lou kicked off a track with "My father always told me..." I just walked away. Sorry to be so harsh, but it reflects my disappointment. Here's hoping Knopfler's next effort will take him further on his earlier trajectory -- higher and brighter with his trademark excellent story-in-song. Expand
