TWDY, what a great and different post-rock band. Ok. I said that. Now, this album set a new direction for them it seems...a super-insomnia experimental phase. Is hard to listen if you are driving or at bed, i find my self lost trying to get a grip to some chord to not fall asleep. I guess i was expecting more melancholy and surprising songs than noisy endless experimental sounds.

You might find yourself wishing the band's music would spiral hellward at least once, but when the quartet hits its mark--burly "War Prayer," dramatic "Invitation," and majestic "New Topia"--it hits hard, stirring emotions like the soundtrack composers with whom the band should be competing in the first place.

For the most part, This Will Destroy You finds its footing on the slow burn, crawling along at a snail’s pace, rarely straying from an established formula (quiet, brooding intro, slow build/hard dynamic shift half to three quarters of the way through, louder still) that, over the course of a whole album, can be somewhat draining.

If this is post-rock, it’s in the purest sense of that prefix: it’s rock that goes beyond expectations for the genre, even while working within its confines, to somewhere that you sense its players aren’t quite accustomed to yet.
