Arrows and Anchors is a masterpiece. It takes the wonder of El Cielo, mixes it with the heavy prog of Tool, and goes all [insert Mike Patton project here] in its weirdness.

The beauty of their sound is its unpredictability: fragments of rock, metal, folk, punk and pop collide and smash, creating Frankenstein monsters that spark into life and chase you down. And they've never sounded more convincing than this.

Its hidden nuances become more apparent with each listen, and it's this replay value that is Fair to Midland's greatest strength.

For all the musical adventure and the growth it reflects, Arrows & Anchors is Fair to Midland's finest effort to date.

This restless Texas prog-metal outfit, best known as the former protégés of Serj Tankian (and the best Tool-aping act since Chevelle), have yet to make an epic game-changer of an album, but Arrows & Anchors, their fourth, comes close.

There's always been a heavier influence in the band's music, but on Arrows & Anchors, their ambitious desires to step outside the genre box often get bogged down in a sea of down-tuned guitar and maudlin lyrics.

Flat, uninspired riffs dressed up in pointless electronics and presided by the watery wailing of Darroh Sudderth. [30 Jul 2011, p.51]

They do NOT get enough recognition, and myself, being mostly a rap fan, heard this group and was INSTANTLY drawn to them and literally addicted. I think Fables From a Mayfly is probably the best, but Arrows and Anchors has the same sound, and the same 'leave you guessing what the song is about' feeling. I love them. I also have their CD " inter.funda.stifle", which has many of the same songs as Fables, but different versions. They just progressively get better. It's just such a mix, that it's hard to fit into one genre. If you like metal, progressive metal, rock, alternative, or all, then PLEASE give them a try....as I promise you will not be disappointed. They absolutely are great in all ways, creatively, and Darroh Sudderth has a voice to be reckoned with. There just isn't one like it. He has so many pitches, throat singing, and it's almost like it's three different vocalists in one. Highly recommend this CD. All of them!!! If you can find Inter.funda.stifle, it's extremely rare and very hard to get. I think it lists on Amazon for nearly $400, however, you can go to their website and get it for $25, and the last I checked, there were three copies left available. Mainly because they are self-produced, independently, and not well known. Expand
