Badbea, then, is a spirited and triumphant addition to the discography. It puts a smile on the listener’s face, will make their feet twitch and will on occasion bring an affectionate tear to the eye.

It's easy enough to be moved by Edwyn Collins' recovery and continued progress; he's truly an inspirational figure. What his continued presence in the recording studio even more wonderful is that his albums keep getting better and better too; deeper and more fully colored and nuanced both in melody and sound.

The resulting album--Collins’s ninth solo effort--is a joy, brimming with ideas, but light of touch.

Badbea fair glows with uncomplicated affirmations, literally buzzing with Collins’ unique wasp-tone guitar interjections--a sound that no one else has come close to approximating.

Badbea is a key part in Edwyn Collins’ remarkable solo career, one that has defied critics and doctors to wilfully do its own thing. A rich, vastly creative experience, it’s a further sign that Edwyn’s work remains something to treasure.

You couldn’t call Badbea wildly original; it’s filled with references to Collins’s musical touchstones (northern soul; the Velvet Underground) and an explicit melodic link to Big Star’s Feel in I’m OK Jack. But Collins is in fine voice, and it’s always a pleasure to have him back.
