  1. The 35 stellar instrumental tracks on Vol. 1-2: Movie Scenes make a convincing argument that in the future Madlib--a one-man band in both the literal and figurative sense--might be better off eschewing rappers and singers as collaborators altogether.

Far from sloppy seconds, the album's both imminently enjoyable and a valuable glimpse into the creative process of one of hip-hop's most accomplished producers. [Apr 2006, p.88]
  3. A very detailed, though still utterly bewildering, glimpse into the producer's musical thought process.
  4. Overall, Movie Scenes is a great record, making up for any lack of cohesiveness with a consistently brilliant parade of wonderful hip-hop beats.
  5. Movie Scenes is further proof that Madlib is the Miles Davis of hip-hop: He's always finding a way to set the bar just a little bit higher.
  6. Though Madlib's restless joi de vivre keeps Beat Konducta moving at a quick clip... the lack of MC firepower considerably limits its real-life enjoyability.
  7. This wild pastiche demonstrates why Madlib is one of the most talented heads in hip-hop. [Apr/May 2006, p.103]
  8. "Movie Scenes" is mystical, it is magical, and it's also prone to confuse some.

Madlib stretches out impressively without vocalists to contain him, but you sense the real bangers have been saved for another occasion. [Jun 2006, p.106]
  10. Falling somewhere between a compilation, a beat CD and a producer showcase, this fails to satisfy on any of those levels.

Don't get me wrong, it is very good. Problem for me is that almost evey song is less than 2 mins and most have spoken word at the start for about 30 to 40 seconds. This means we get only about 1 min of actual music per track. Those 1 mins of music are amazing, but I would have preferred longer tracks. Each time I get into a track, it ends. I'd love to hear these songs streched out for at least 3-4 mins. Madlib is amazing talent. No doubt about it. I love that he sampled Van Dyke Parks...it was like a personal shout-out to me.
