Brighten takes it all a step further, and more than measures up to his other solo efforts. Heck, in a lot of ways, it even matches (or even surpasses) a couple of the post-Layne-era Alice albums.

A long-overdue show of individual brilliance.

Alice In Chains fans should prepare to love this, but expect more echoes of Jar Of Flies than of Dirt.

Confident, inward-looking, forgiving, yet bruising in all the right places, it's not just a great album by Cantrell's standards; it's a great record, period.

Brighten is aptly named, though, because the biggest departure for Cantrell is trading his usual gloom, depression, and cynicism for a more positive, even uplifting tone. ... But it is still a Jerry Cantrell album, so darkness and musical tension find their way through cracks in the pleasant facade.
