It ends up less like Eric Clapton Unplugged than Lou-Barlow-dropping-a-four-track-in-a-puddle-of-muddy-water-while-burning-his-tongue-on-a-toasted-marshmallow. All the better for it, of course.

Overall this is a surprising, satisfying set, one gives us another angle on a band that seems to be always shifting.

Campfire Songs admirably continues along their new musical direction and beckons you to head to Vermont wearing a wooly jumper, with all ingredients needed for S’mores in tow.

It’s not an essential release in the Men’s rapidly growing discography, but as a rare snapshot of a band constantly in motion, Campfire Songs is sensible at least.

At its best, Campfire Songs is a modest document of the spirit and atmosphere that produced New Moon.

Two properly good moments out of five isn’t a great ratio, but at least it’s telling us that The Men’s wagon is still rollin’ steady.
