I pre-ordered "Days Are Gone" because I loved HAIM's 2013 iTunes concert set, which combined raw rock with catchy pop. When the album finally dropped, though, my excitement changed to disappointment at hearing only one song (My Song 5) with the energy I enjoyed in the band's live performance. In the studio, HAIM loses its power, buffing and layering until no rock edges remain. Days Are Gone is a pretty impregnable collection of songs, their alloy of golden Fleetwood Mac melodies and liquid R&B polished to a reflective shine. [Oct 2013, p.103]
  2. 11 tracks of stick-to-the-roof-of-your-eardrums music that sounds all at once immediate and laid-back.

The lyrics flirt with turmoil--there are lots of songs about holding on or jumping into the fire, and so forth--but don’t really say much of anything.
