Part of what makes Circa Waves so compelling is that they are able to match the sound of their influences while still believably making the results sound their own. They've grown into an assured rock entity, but they've retained their fundamental sense of working-class Liverpudlian blues.

While Circa Waves are stepping up, they’re just as confident in stripping things back.

Different Creatures is likely to prove too nostalgic to win over critics of 00s ‘indie landfill’, and Circa Waves still lack the spark that is going to reignite British guitar rock, but that won’t matter for most fans of their debut. This is another exciting, polished album that's destined for outdoor stages.

Whilst obviously not the best album of all-time, Different Creatures adds considerable weight to the band’s growing ambitions.

The Liverpudlian foursome have by far exceeded expectations with their new, more defined, crisper record.

Retro but slightly lazy, too: there’s nothing distinguishing this lot from the more disposable products of last decade’s guitar-rock boom.

"Different Creatures" makes all the right sounds on the surface but in reality there is nothing to it. Like taking a microwave dinner and serving it on fancy crockery, Circa Waves have little in the way of originality or authentic flavour but can certainly make something initially sound enticing.
