Doris & the Daggers is settled in an appealing way. Kannberg eases into a collection of classicist guitar pop that recalls vintage '80s college rock from New Zealand and Australia, but also bears some resemblance to the sharp, knowing pop of Kelley Stoltz, who functioned as a part-time collaborator on the record.

Here, Scott Kannberg finally comes to terms with what originally made him such an important part of Pavement and the '90s underground scene--and runs with it.

There is not much on Doris and the Daggers that is daring or new in terms of musical explorations, but the energetic vocals and pop nuances coupled with the sincerity and the understated transcendence of the songs is quite alluring.

This isn’t a record you crank in traffic en route to an across-town meeting; it’s a record to unwind with later that night on your second glass of Syrah--a sturdy shrug to cap off the day

His avuncular, keep-it-moving approach prevents things from getting too deep. [Apr 2017, p.39]
