Lyrically this album is insane! Earl's flow is dope too. The production was ok it felt a bit odd in some songs but that does not take away from the fact that Earl is one of the best rappers around right now. My favourite track is "Chum" and this should be album of the year.

Earl is definitely one of the more talented OF members, and this project shows why Earl got so much attention back in 2010. It's incredible to hear Earl rapping, and at his age, it's scary to think about how good he can get when he's discovering new technical abilities. The production on the album is rather simple, but fits well with Earl's fast and complex rhyme schemes.

It seems earl knows very well that he's great at rapping, as 'Doris' is very anti-hook-ish (is that a term?). Overall, this is an incredible project from a kid who isn't even allowed to legally purchase alcohol.

Best tracks, imo: Burgundy, Sunday, Chum, Molasses, Whoa.

Earl Sweatshirt is a breath of fresh air. Finally a rap album that doesn't fall victim to the shortcomings of most modern rap. He abandons hooks and traditional structure and manages to give us something that, while not completely revolutionary, is still fresh and wholly entertaining.

Earl Sweatshirt is a wunderkind. Very few writers/vocalists develop this level of lyrical and rhythmic prowess at the age of 19, let alone rappers. "Rawer than the skinned knee cap on the blacktop" -Hive

You may count on one hand the number of rappers who were as strong lyrically as Earl was at age 15/16, but you'd probably still have fingers left.

For Earl Sweatshirt's Doris, the standard of excellence has been set a level higher than any rapper his age due both to the skill he exhibited on his first release "Earl", and year-long absence somewhere between late 2010 and Early 2012. In this reviewer's opinion he met and exceeded the expectations hoisted upon by himself and his peers. Doris is a dark, brooding haze of atmospherics and minimal compositions. His bars so dense, it has been recommended you listen with the lyrics in front of you, less you become lost in his labyrinthine wordplay. His flow is like a slow and deliberate mass wasting of land. Simply a torrent of internal rhyme. The guest features complement the album's ominous sounds very well, especially Vince Staples' turn in Hive (a personal favorite from the album). The production features synthesizers in the style of underground UK Bass music punctuated with percussion with an Indie Rock groove. Molasses and Guild especially sound like Supreme Clientele era Wu-Tang, with the former assisted by The Legendary RZA. Tyler the Creator, especially on "Sasquatch" once again displays his deft production skills with strings reminiscent of Gza's Liquid Swords.

This album is all about making a subtle but menacing impact.

A personal favorite stanza from the album: "Breaking news, death's less important when the Lakers lose/There's Lead in that baby food/Heads trying to make it through/fishnetted legs for them eyes that she cater to/ ride dirty as the sky that you pray to."

This album is recommended for music fans of all genres, who enjoy masterful wordplay, clever similes and metaphors, tight flows, and bass-heavy but varied, minimalist production. Certainly, this album will compete for rap album of the year.

P.S. Earl commented on his dislike for Jay-z's Magna Carter album and received a bit of backlash, with some criticism questioning whether Earl is "qualified" or has achieved enough to speak on the subject. For what it's worth, Doris is 10x better than that album. Metascore: Magna Carter-59, Doris -86. Maybe he's qualified now?

What really stood out for me after listening to 'Doris' is that Earl is capable of creating and manipulating mood with his music. Songs like 'Hive' and 'Hoarse', which happen to be two of my favourite tracks, are thick, brooding and dark; You really feel slow and sluggish. It's almost as the music hovers over you, weighing on you, but in the the best way possible. Other songs like 'Burgundy' and 'Chum', while they are brighter, are just as effective at creating a mood. While its not as dark, the music is a backdrop for melancholic lyrics that are at times deeply personal. In slight contrast to the personal tracks, there are tracks like, '20 Wave Caps' and 'Centurion' that are used to flex Earl's lyrical abilities. These tracks sort of bring back the feeling of Earl's first studio album 'Earl', but with far better production. Features on the album are in abundance with 11 out of 15 tracks having someone other than Earl on the track. Fellow Odd Future member Domo Genesis makes more than one appearance on the album, lendind verses to '20 Wave Caps' and the closing track, 'Knight' respectively. Domo delivers on both of his verses. He has shown major growth as a MC from his first album, 'Rolling Papers' to his most recent project with producer The Alchemist (who is also featured on 'Doris') 'No Idols'. California rapper Vince Staples also makes multiple appearances on this LP, delivering one of my favourite verses on 'Doris' and one of my favourite verses this year in general on 'Hive'. He also appears in 'Burgundy' and 'Centurion', delivering a decent verse before a unsuspected beat change, leading to my personal favourite verse by Earl on the album. Mr. Sweatshirt has a few production credits on this LP, mostly in collaboration with an impressive number of other producers, including The Neptunes, RZA, Tyler the Creator, Samiyam and BadBadNotGood. While I did thoroughly enjoy this album, there were a couple things I felt were unneeded, badly or not utilized enough and just not up to par with the rest of the album. The track 'Guild' featuring Mac Miller feels like a filler track. Both rappers voices are pitch shifted down and the beat feels lazy and slow. Both rappers verses are sub-par compared to both of their normal output. It feels like a track that was chopped and screwed badly. I don't know, maybe I have to be in a different mind state to enjoy it. The track 'Molasses' features The RZA...and he doesn't have a verse on the song. He found on the hook which I found sort of weak. This is an example of not taking advantage of opportunity to enhance a song. Songs like 'Sunday', 'Uncle Al', 'Whoa' and '523' were decent but didn't stand out as much to me.

Overall, this album was very enjoyable despite a couple slight hiccups in between. It's a case of the pros outweighing the cons. Earl has proved to me that he is a serious artist capable of crafting songs that are deep, meaningful and that can create a mood effectively. His young age and immaturity doesn't show nearly as much as it did on previous projects. I believe this is one of many solid albums we will see from Earl Sweatshirt in the future.

Filled with drug use and rape, while sneak-peeking at undertones of depression and a rough past, Earl throws together one of my all-time favorite hip-hop albums. Almost never slipping up, Earl is on-point in every song and carries-and develops-his own incredibly unique style while telling stories of his life with trickles of the best flow hip-hop has seen. Earl catches criticism only by those with closed minds, and those that enjoy the heavily-produced but lyrically-lacking mainstream songs that are oh-so-popular nowadays. Doris is the exact breath of fresh air I needed to keep faith in the hip-hop industry. While most rappers have sold out by now, Earl puts heart into his work and you can feel the skill and professionalism radiating off of his use of words. Earl, like his father, is a poet, and can twist any string of words into a mind-boggling bar with incredible use of literary technique, such as complex rhyme schemes and assonance.
