Eraserland hits the hardest when Showalter is alone with his limber, echoing acoustic guitar. His voice reminds of other greats; he totally owns it as his own.

If 2017's Hard Love overreached, Eraserland is a successful recalibration. [Apr 2019, p.91]

As the album proceeds, these simpatico players alternate between swaddling Showalter's introspective songs in downy ambience and dialling up the grandeur, before the Clash-like stomper "Moon Landing," with Jason Isbell blazing on electric guitar, relives the accrued existential torment. [Apr 2019, p.36]

A sometimes harrowing but ultimately hard-earned triumph, seems to have reinvigorated Showalter to keep Strand Of Oaks afloat as the search continues.

Somehow this totem of influences works, stacked one atop another in a monument to the newly refocused Strand of Oaks.

An album balanced precariously at the tipping point between disillusion and creative rebirth, and all the better for it. [May 2019, p.88]

Most of Strand of Oaks' tunes would sound good in an arena. Eraserland does not shy from this formula much, especially in the front half.

Recording with members of My Morning Jacket, Showalter sounds re-energized on this dynamic collection of spaced out power pop and dreamy psych-rock that owes a bit to fellow Philadelphians War on Drugs.

It took some goading from My Morning Jacket members Carl Broemel, Bo Koster, Patrick Hallahan, and Tom Blankenship, who also serve as the backup band, but Showalter found his voice again, and the resulting 11-track set strikes a winning balance between dusty, soul-bearing Midwest folk and sanguine heartland rock.

What appeals to you about this Strand of Oaks effort will likely depend on which side of this spectrum you fall on--in the heartland or out in space. That's a divide that Eraserland creates, putting it somewhat out of sync with itself, but the title track brings those worlds together beautifully.

Eraserland is a somewhat indulgent listen. While it can occasionally lash out for a moment (“Moon Landing”), it might be best to tighten up the compositions for the next go-round.

The net result is an album that hangs suspended between Earth and the stars. [Jun 2019, p.116]
