He’s woven a stunning debut which is as scattershot as it is coherent, and his homeland is certainly right to be heralding him as the next big thing.

This album has an eccentric palette and shows off Streten’s wide-ranging tastes; if you can’t find something to enjoy here, you’re not looking hard enough.

This debut album scraps coherence and convention and prioritises the more vital values of music; making songs that are both accessible and rinsed in invention.

Streten proves that potential mass appeal need not come at the expense of creative flair or fresh ideas.

The musical collage approach, is the starting point for a captivating album of pop electronica. [Mar 2013, p.101]

    Tender, beautifully melancholy urban electronica.

Flume manages to be somewhat of a timeless release in terms of modern electronic music, one that could have dropped at any point over the past 12 years or so and still made an impact of some sort.

Streten explores his sonic palette with varying degrees of success on Flume.

Laid back beats, a high pitched effect methodically layered within the effects, vocals, bring in the bridge then loop the beat. Arguably this is the pattern to all electronic music yet there is not much variety within this paradigm; luckily there are enough winning moments on Flume to make you forgive this.

The entire album succeeds so well in its refusal to succumb to dance music tropes or to wallow entirely in obscure new trends.

Flume's debut certainly fits into a post-2000s club vibe and DJ culture that borrows liberally, and often with inspired aplomb, from cut-and-paste hip-hop, avant-garde electronic composition, ambient pop, and contemporary R&B.

It’s a bit TEED on a beach, or SBTRKT with mask exchanged for a tasteful side-parting.

Streton definitely has the production chops to make a solid record. However, if he wants a great record, he needs to edit down that tracklist and sequence it for cohesion.

Flume’s decision to try his hand at everything, whilst demonstrating his evident enthusiasm and frequent successes, comes at the price of the album’s coherency. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of potential here.

There's much to admire here, but Flume needs to fix his identity. [Mar 2013, p.72]

Although it toes a dangerous line of resounding too imitative of its own influences, the young producer is nonetheless well on his way to fully embracing his identity.

Personally, I found the music to be remarkably similar to the more electronic tracks of James Blake. However, unlike the works of James Blake, Flume did not manage to illicit an emotional response, and instead was simply a "fun" album to listen too. However, that does not change that the tracks are very jumpy (almost to fault) and creative, which gives the album a nice energy that makes the album very enjoyable to listen to while doing something else (like exercise or work around the house).
