For anyone who loved AlbertHammond Jr.'s work with the Strokes, you'll probably enjoy this album a lot as well. Hammond isn't necessarily doing much different on this album but in terms of songwriting and consistency, this is a great album. Definitely worth a listen.

His music and his style are both impeccably tailored. Those perfect lines can be more admirable than breathtaking, though, and they're remarkably easy to glide right past.

Hammond seems to have a new lease on life, and that ebullience and curiosity are very much what makes Francis Trouble such a thrilling listen.

Call this a mismatch, a contradiction, if you want, but only he can fully acknowledge this seriousness, this complexity. And if this is a ‘coming-to-terms-with’-type record, it does suggest he is starting that process, even if--musically--the progression remains somewhat tender.
