Freeze, Melt is a daring move for the band; they aren't exactly turning their backs on the huge, happy sound that earned them their glittering place in the dance rock firmament, but they do bring their sound down to earth in admirable, emotionally affecting fashion. In the process, they prove that they don't need to make music that's great to dance to in order to make music that's great.

This body of work is as meticulous as it is melancholy, which is what makes it so profoundly personal and universal at the same time.

Freeze, Melt is a fitting soundtrack for the landscape pictured on the cover. These are spacious tracks to complement clear blue skies, not lipstick-smudged anthems for strobe-lit mega clubs. Listeners who haven't tuned into Cut Copy since Zonoscape may be surprised by their latest direction, but longtime fans who welcome change from record to record will find something to enjoy out here in the country.

The entirety of Freeze, Melt is meditative in the most inoffensive sense; there is no gravitational force – no push and pull to the songs for them to have any more impact than a gentle breeze has on a vast, surging ocean.

The formula is executed well, while the production and songwriting keep the Australian four-piece ahead of any imitators. ... Yes, new music is good to have and good to experience, but when the tunes become interchangeable that notion starts to feel hollow.

A meditative, inward-looking affair, Freeze, Melt is best heard after a big night in. [Sep 2020, p.91]

The result is an album that appears caught between modes, playfully riding cascading synths even as it lyrically subsumes itself in dourness.

This album is a mellow synth pop fantasy from start to finish. Melodic, reflective and absolutely gorgeous.

While initially deterred by the change in direction, I found this album really grew on me and is one of my favorites from Cut Copy now. WhileWhile initially deterred by the change in direction, I found this album really grew on me and is one of my favorites from Cut Copy now. While the whole album is listenable, everything from Stop, Horizon onward is just mesmerizing. The mellow synths throughout are thoughtful, nostalgiac and always pleasing to the ear. Each song evolves from its initial sounds, which are almost invariable deceptively simple, and takes them to new and exciting places by gradually overlaying contrasting ideas; but does so without ever sacrificing the initial sounds themselves, instead incorporating them into the greater picture in unexpected ways. It delves into new realms of Cut Copy sound by moving away from danceable synth-pop as it identifies them and moving closer to middle and down tempo songs. The result is a brilliant, intimate, smooth and crystalline album that show the versatility of Cut Copy. Expand

Beautiful music. I think Cut Copy have made a masterpiece and it has been totally unappreciated.

Excellent forward-motion for a great band who are taking a new path away from the dance-floor.

A mix of lower/mid-tempo tracks w/ a few more up-tempo tracks would have been a more natural way to ease into this new direction. I for one was hoping they might eventually explore some of the more psychedelic moments on Free Your Mind. Expand
