Recorded in one take, and featuring with two drummers, a myriad of vintage synths, a few guitars and god knows how much more technology all hardwired into their mixing desk, the record flows together effortlessly.

From Deewee is a welcome and satisfying return from the sibling pair.

Not for the first time, their presentation is inspired but the material can fall a little flat. [Jun 2017, p.37]

Unfortunately, that sense of immediacy isn’t always present. Sometimes it shows that From Deewee was rehearsed many times and things get a little bit too mechanical in the middle. It’s still easy to find yourself getting wrapped up in it though and, when it hits, it’s easy to hear why Soulwax are hailed as such innovators.

Whilst production and rhythms are excellent, the hooks (barring the album’s final lyric: “There’s so much bullshit comin’ out of your mouth”) often fall short.

Some tracks will work better live, but consider the experiment a success. [Jun 2017, p.112]

From Deewee is undeniably good, but it’s not great. With any luck, From Deewee will be remixed and reshaped into a juggernaut live set or a follow up album like Nite Versions.

Not the best, but certainly one of the best.

I met Soulwax when I was playing Test Drive Unlimited, playing Another Excuse, volume pushed to the max. Some months ago when I saw their new release - Transient Program For Drums And Machines - after eleven years of silence I was overly excited. And then, FROM DEEWEE got teased. I kept listening to it until the album came out, and then I was blown away.

This album is more than music: it's an experiment. Recorded in one shot by seven musicians from their record label (They're FROM DEEWEE, get it?) this album is meant to be listened continuously like a mixtape. Some transitions are absolutely beautiful and got my jaw dropping.

I seriously hope they will continue with this spirit and style, and will create a remix album like they did with Any Minute Now.
