Future Standards isn't quite "Howe Gelb, the Moonlight, and You," but it's closer than anyone might expect, and he plays lounge lizard here entirely on his own terms, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable detour for a multi-faceted artist.

Future Standards is both an intimate, low-key experience and a highly welcome new detour. [Jan 2017, p.25]

It’s a pleasingly consistent collection of songs, but special mention goes to the raunchy Relevant (complete with solos for Reinhardt-like guitar and swaggering piano) and May You Never Fall In Love’s wordly advice. All said, it’s a good look on him.

The lyrics are delivered just above speaking pace to empathise with the listener, with similes and wordplay that vivify and even try to explain the vagaries of love. [Nov 2016, p.58]

Gelb may be onto something and his chutzpah i laudable but, ultimately, only time decides which songs become standards. [Dec 2017, p.94]

A few of these songs could be standards, and most of them hold up well, but, even given the nature of the album, the occasional sonic dissipation keeps it from being a true classic, even if it’s a nice, unique addition to Gelb’s catalog.

Future Standards feels a little too respectful, well-done but static and without much animating fire.
