The old gang is back together, and they’ve cooked up a project that’s compelling front-to-back, a clear progression on their established styles both separately and as a unit without a bad track in sight.

Every spin is undoubtedly an exercise in active listening; an Aesop Rock album isn’t a casual affair. Close attention is required to grasp the nuances and cleverness of his writing. But for those who appreciate the creative lyricism he consistently slings and Blockhead’s dreamy, layered production, Garbology isn’t likely to end up in the trash.

There are few better ways to ride through the current Omicron surge than spinning “Garbology” and joining Aesop and Blockhead as they excavate garbage for gold.

Despite its tight construction, Garbology is at its best when it succumbs to a certain irresolution.

Featuring only one guest verse from Bavitz’s longtime friend Homeboy Sandman, Garbology feels less like a deliberate sequel to a great Aesop Rock album like None Shall Pass and more like a next chapter. It’s a beautifully disparate slab of rap music that satisfies on the first play but reveals more of itself with each playthrough.

Garbology isn't nearly as complex or conceptually driven as 2020's Spirit World Field Guide, but it still contains an abundance of memorable lyrics, and demonstrates Aesop's talent for spinning fantastic stories out of nothing.
