The Jersey quartet offers its most effective heartland punk cocktail to date, but shakes and stirs the concoction with new influences and musical approaches. [No. 113, p.56]
It’s not the band’s greatest, most spirited or unifying; it’s not The ’59 Sound or American Slang. Rather, Get Hurt represents the exorcism and the catharsis that needed to transpire.
That’s not to say that Get Hurt isn’t a good album, with some excellent songs on it. But, if you’re looking for more of the blue collar punk of the band’s early years, you might initially be underwhelmed by what it has to offer.
The band has framed Get Hurt as a shift in its Springsteen-meets-Replacements sound, but they're overselling things a tad: only a couple of songs, like the title track, truly feel all that different from their last couple of records.
Get Hurt is a shockingly misguided assemblage of over-processed hair-metal guitars, '80s adult-contemporary keyboard swill, and hilariously overblown skullduggery.

The subject matter is dark, creating a more brooding, sombre and powerful album than previous. It definately needs a few listens to fully appreciate, but as a fan, I think that Get Hurt stands amongst their best work. It's definately worth going for the deluxe version, the bonus tracks are easily album-worthy. This is sure to be a devisive Gaslight album amongst fans and critics, but don't shelve it after the first listen... it creeps into your heart and soul.…Expand

That being said, I feel that this isBrian Fallon and co. are the best songwriters in this current generation of music, in my opinion. That being said, I feel that this is different. Not in a bad way, though. It still sounds like the Gaslight Anthem I have come to love. The band decided (very publicly) to try to do something different with this album, and for the most part they crafted a solid piece, largely inspired by Fallon's split with his wife of 10 years. Having been through a divorce myself, I identify with his feelings, a mixture of anger, sadness, grief, regret, loss, and perhaps most importantly, confusion. Lyrically, in songs like "Get Hurt,'" you can clearly hear the sadness and confusion (the things once in order/ now seem so strange) and it is apparent that the personal struggles Fallon went through found their way into his work. High points on the LP include "1000 Years" and "Selected Poems", both of which are sure to sound phenomenal live. A Low point on the album is the track "Helter Skeleton", which would have been better suited as a bonus track. Overall a Solid effort from a band that wanted to prove to everyone, and more importantly, to themselves, that they were more than "cars, maria, the radio, and Springsteen." It's not their worst, but even if it was, it is still better than most.…Expand

I understand that this album was meant to be a little heavier than their previous works. There are a few songs that have a hard edge to them but overall I wouldn't call the album a hard rock record. This is not an album for someone looking for a great guitar solo but there is some good riffing on several tracks. Brian Fallon has a original approach to vocals. I've never heard a singer who sounds at all like him. There are truly no dud tracks and I'm seriously looking into their other albums because this sure is a group that is worth my time.…Collapse
