On this album, the music meets and sometimes exceeds those ambitions.

Those songs rise above the story line, but probably wouldn’t have existed without characters to sing them--reason enough for a rock songwriter to venture into a musical.

It's difficult to say how good this musical is just from the songs and pieces of dialogue presented here, but the songs have a weary, inevitable flow to them, as if fate forced them into a dark room with little light or air or chance of redemption.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is chockfull of slow-to-mid tempo tracks that prevent it from truly soaring, musically. Without repeated listens, it’s difficult to follow, but this release should be treated as a teaser.
  5. 60
Removed from the plot, the edgy swamp/country music score doesn’t connect with the powerful and gripping intensity of the show.

While a few songs stand apart (Case's wickedly sexy "That's Who I Am"), the set mostly makes you want to see the blood spilling onstage.
