    Dense, rich and deeply rewarding.

Though played out across a potentially draining 75 minutes, Going Going... throws a few pleasant curves as it’s presaged by four unexpectedly evocative, scene-setting instrumentals, including the atypically delicate Marblehead.

It’s The Wedding Present as we’ve known/loved them since 1991’s tour de force Seamonsters--opening squalls of feedback, a deceptively sweet melody, and Gedge’s lyrics fluctuating between self-lacerating and acrimonious in the midst of ferocious guitars. We’re on far less familiar ground with a number of the other 19 tracks, though.

Going, Going..., the group's ninth record, is full of bizarre twists and turns that make it unlike any album they have released to date.

Gedge could’ve reached this happy ending with fewer tracks and less gas money, but as anyone signing up for this road trip knows, his rambling never really gets old.

Going, Going… nevertheless shows the Wedding Present to still be a viable, vital force some 30 years on. And compared with their peers, the majority of whom are being anthologized rather than releasing new material, that’s saying something.

Going, Going... is a little overlong, but it’s also bursting with some tremendous songs and a vitality that belies over 30 years in the game.

Those uncharacteristic twist and turns--the hybrid of orchestral arrangements and classic indie pop formulas--give the album cohesion and a narrative despite seeming out of place at first. Still, the LP is testament to the group’s ability to churn out perfectly wrought, desperate pop, time and time again.

The only problem is that, at 20 tracks, it’s far too long, and while there’s nothing particularly bad here, the weaker tracks seem a bit like filler.

The album might not stand with their all-time best work, like Seamonsters or Watusi, but it's hard to deny the brilliance of a band that, so late in its career, can crank out an album as passionate, hook-filled, and flat-out fiery as this. That's the true surprise of Going, Going....

The first four tracks are moody, post-rock instrumentals, but elsewhere filthy, squalling guitars and a meaty swing dominate. [Oct 2016, p.40]
