SpringEAug 27, 2004i heard "float on" on the radio and i thought MM sounded good, so I bought their new Cd and was surprised to hear that god is an asshol,e which he is not, and that they totaly are against God. It's a shame really. I like that one song.

AustinandWilldavidandersonMay 30, 2004I would like this album, but i'm a fan of music. This is just a terrible sound. I mean, listen to "DEvil's Workday". I was laughing hysterically at our local record store. The horns in Devil's workour add a wonderful Lion-O effect from relient k's pitiful album. Modest Mouse is the worst band besides the Bumblebeez 81.

VallenR.Mar 17, 2006Wow, this is mainstream pop-rock galore. What happened to the Modest Mouse we used to know? With the the exception of two or three good songs, you should really stay away from this album.

darrenpApr 17, 2004I like hotdogs. This CD had none. WTF?

jilmJun 25, 2005sad... it's just sad. two good songs and call it a day. u saw their most recent tour and i wanted to kick isaac brock's ass. not only did i have to pay almost 40 bucks this time around, (it was their last chance from me) but they only played 4 songs from any other albums. really. it was bad. good for them and their money, but i am through.

Apr 25, 2012A rather dreadful album, only "Float On" even registers as anything of quality. This album is a complete waste of money and a complete waste of time.

MarcusJApr 6, 2004At moments awe-inspiring. Some great standouts like Float On, Ocean Breaths Salty, and Bury Me With It. Great guitar and lyrics throughout. Weikel?s drumming is on par with Green?s work.

ThomasLApr 6, 2004This is a fantastic album. I bought it at 8 this morning and I have already listened to it straight through 3 times. It isn't as immediately important and relevant as The Moon and Antartica seemed to be...but with each repeated listen it becomes more obvious that this album is a perfect companion piece to the already brilliant Modest Mouse catalog

SandorCApr 7, 2004Not their best album, but better than anything else in existence.

erikeApr 8, 2004not their best, but damn close to it.

MrStalinMay 16, 2004I'm kind of new to Modest Mouse - but, on the strength of this album they are indeed a great little band. Yeah okay, bits of it do sound like Tom Waits and Talking Heads ... but hey, that's no bad thing is it? Very impressed - and i will go in search of their previous albums quick smart! Are they gigging in England?

BrianAug 28, 2004A big disappointment, ultimately. Songs like "Float On," "The View," and "The World At Large" are masterful, while songs like "Bury Me With It," "This Devil's Workday," and "Dancehall" are absolute crapfests. Only recommended for prior fans.

DomS.Apr 5, 2004Some magnificent shit. Isaac Brock is insane, but the blade of his attack has been dulled beautifully. God bless that glorious redneck.

jacpApr 6, 2004Not as good as other MM albums. But different. I perfer the abrasive nature of the band rather then the pop hooks
-
-
EelAApr 7, 2004"Good news..." lacks the depth of "Moon and Antarctica," but so what? Modest Mouse is still a group on top of their game, and isn't that the most we can ask of a group that has consistantly kicked so much ass? This album may not go down in history as the best Modest Mouse album ever, but it is still pretty damn good.

Awards & Rankings
-
A lot of major label-imposed ideas, like rhythm guitar and a heartbreakingly conventional new bass sound, combine to utterly ruin the record's first half. If you can make it through to News' innards, however, an EP's worth of something like better-recorded, more thought-out Lonesome Crowded West material awaits.
-
Weathered now, their herky-jerk stands up smartly to interjections from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
-
Blender[Brock is] adept at wringing out emotion while straddling sentimentality, but too often here, gauche studio affectations make his sap sound plain cheap. [Apr 2004, p.134]
