This album is such a masterpiece in this modern time where pop has been mixed with trap beats, and I love that we are not getting that type of music in this proyect. I'm so amazed that such young artists make music like this, it is clear that the production is astonishing and the messenge throughout this album is so beautiful and honest

In my opinion, if she kept those three songs in her back pocket for another album or EP, and swapped "Oxytocin" and "Lost Cause" in the sequencing, the album would still be slightly longer than her debut at 45 minutes, but with better flow and focus. If you find the album isn't quite working for you, try making those adjustments and see if it works better for you, too.

Despite my criticisms about the sequencing for most of the middle of the album, the sequencing from "Your Power" onward is flawless and its amazing how the Baird O'Connells keep successfully pushing themselves (and each other) creatively with each successive track right up to the bittersweet end.

I do hope that they can keep up their passion for their music and can come back even stronger on their next effort.

Showing so much more than her debut album, i think Billie is taking a great path. This is a sexy, loud and, weirdly sad record. The lyrics are also a major departure from her previous album, which she shows way more maturity and poise in her writing than her debut, as seen on tracks like the album closer Male Fantasy and folk-ballad Your Power, where her vulnerability is on display for the world to see. It's also intriguing to see how Billie incorporates certain genres into songs based on their messages, like Happier Than Ever, where she sings over a soft guitar in the first-half in the song only to let out her true anger in the second portion of the song in a rock-heavy outro, or the beautifully harmonic intro in GOLDWING, where it feels like she's introducing this sense of innocence only to warn said "gold winged angel" to not beware of the greed and manipulation by the industry who only want to use her. Overall, the album is a wonderful development from her debut, and it's only a matter of tuning in in a few years to find out how she's going to follow this up. Expand

Happier Than Ever is a huge step into the new era of her career as she experiments with different tones and chords. Her lyrics have a heavy weight to them such as feeling like a burden in life and in a relationship. She demostrates this in relatable ways and it just feels like such a perfect ode to her past. Finneas absolutely killed it on producing all of these tracks as well, "Overheated" being another highlight. The album's best run, however, doesn't even come until towards the end. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The album starts with a great low piano feel showing the beauty of Billie's voice that swiftly transforms into a catchy synth beat.
The 2nd track really feels much better, the layers are so well produced and they compliment each other as well as the vocals so well and the track ends with a nice rough-'er' feel to it- giving a great impulse to the listener towards the next track.
The guitar on the 3rd track reminds me of The Strokes fsr (that purity and simplicity yet beauty of the melody), the chorus on this track has a wonderful feel to it as well (great fading high notes- also Finneas is playing really well with the echo of Billie's voice, bringing out the rawness and beauty of it).
4th track shows how great is the combination between Billie's vocals and Finneas's creative ideas. It contains a beautiful tempo change and guitar riffle to keep it flowing so nicely along Billie's vocals... wonderful work producing this track.
Feels like the beat for the 5th track is a bit too rough considering the way this LP was going, this track feels completely different compared to the previous tracks on this LP (almost like a track from WWAFAWDWG... but not really- still has a twist to it that keeps it close to this LP). Overall a nice drop of roughness to the easy feel of the album.
Track 6 keeps up the idea of the crazy sounds layered one over the other that Billie is known for... nothing too impressive or different to comment on here...
Track 7 however brings back to life that new feel she presents to us in this LP (the guitar came back and the vocals are much better- which ultimately creates a nice beat and catchy melody)
Track 8 keeps the piano silent and far away from the listener and the voice closer to us. Sounds like a classic ballad with a nice change at the end from an ending in a major chord going flat and fading away into another part of the song that's a bit rougher but still nice.
Track 9 opens a part of the album where Billie starts reflecting on the criticism she got from her haters and from her fans, she's much more personal and direct than in her debut album. The ending of this song brings a great " bridge" towards the next track and it surprisingly somehow still holds the structure of the album.
Track 10 holds the same background as the previous song but better produced and more strict. Yet again feels like a track from her debut album but has a good connection to this LP.
Track 11 really feels like Billie comes back to the realism of this LP and goes back into a more dreamy feel (and i'm not a big fan of it).
There is just too much echo on her voice in track 12 (it would've been much better if her voice was less echo-'e' which would've made it much more personal and nice in the structure of the album- keeping the listener more focused yet so calm). This track wins it with the power of the lyrics.
Track 13 and 14 show a great fusion between a dreamy and far away state of the old Billie and a more real and close up version of Billie that she is presenting in this album... a great bridge towards a new feel to her music.
Track 15 was really predictable till that guitar hit... how unfortunate that it was way too rough but what a great change from the Billie we knew to what we're hearing right now.
The last track on this LP really shows how much more real Billie's lyrics and voice became, they're not that dreamy and fading away so much anymore. And i am sure saying this... Billie ended on a positive note and on a really nice irony or hypocrisy and maybe a message about how unsure she is about her thoughts? (during the whole album, Billie says that she hates the person she sings about but the last words on this LP are “I know I should but I could never hate you”)

Overall i had a great listen of this LP and i felt like Billie is really trying to get more direct and strict and real with her ideas and thoughts and this album is a good product of that. The producing is wonderful with some faults or irregularities here and there but nothing that kept me off of any track on this album.
This LP is a great step towards a new, exciting feel...different from what we thought Billie Eilish was.

Comparisons with When/Where are unavoidable. This time around Billie is dealing with the here and now of her life and L.A.'s all-out war of the sexes. She didn't ask to be abused; she didn't filter men to find another Patrick or Finnie, either. Tough problem to find someone honest and as bright as she is.

My gosh, Billie Eilish’s Happier Than Ever is a massive improvement over its predecessor, “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?”. Gone are the gratuitously dark lyrics and overly electronic music that I had issues with in Eilish’s previous release. Instead, we get (occasionally brilliant) tracks that for the most part are really fun to listen to. A big thing about this release that I was a fan of was just how different it is. From the surprise of Happier Than Ever turning into a rock song or Not My Responsibility being less like a song and more like a podcast episode, this album has many aces up its sleeve.

I wish I could provide my entire song-by-song commentary, but unfortunately the character limit will not allow me.

Overall, for someone who was not Billie Eilish’s debut’s biggest fan, I was very much satisfied with Happier Than Ever. I loved how this release is much more chill, which allowed me to focus on the lyrics more. The lyrics were also more enjoyable for me because of the different subject matter. These two reasons make Happier Than Ever a “double improvement”, if you will. I just loved how different this album was from anything Billie Eilish (or anyone, for that matter) had released. I will certainly add a number of the songs on Happier Than Ever to my regular listening mix. I’m so glad for this release because it completely changed my perception of Billie Eilish and gave me some songs that I was really fond of. Fans of Billie will love this album, and I would definitely recommend Happier Than Ever to lovers of chill pop, as the “acoustic Billie” sound is really fun to listen to. I’m eager to hear what she comes out with next, as this album was very well done. Highlights: Getting Older, I Didn’t Change My Number, Billie Bossa Nova, my future, Lost Cause, Halley’s Comet, Not My Responsibility, OverHeated, Your Power, Therefore I Am, and Happier Than Ever.

It's what the poorly chosen lead singles and divisive aesthetic change planted in the collective mind but now we see it's none of that. Those choices though seemingly messy were deliberately testing out dedication and god is it rewarded. The first song,"Getting Older" is simple but packs a punch. It's a thoughtful meditation on aging and pressure of fame yet despite the suggested cliché it feels relatable. And she spares no truths as she criticizes herself ("last week i realized i crave pity /when i re-tell a story, i make everything sound worse") admits the killjoy industry effect on singing("things i once enjoyed just keeping me employed now").ironically she doesn't fall into self pity instead seeming mature and semi-omniscient and objective. She isn't complaining she's saying the facts. Finally concluding the nondescript closer with a warning of what's to come ("i've had some trauma, did things i didn't wanna/was too afraid to tell ya but now i think it's time")
Then the flood gates pour open. The fun bad girl block your man tune begins with a jolting sample of an animal roaring before Billie takes the reigns like a cool kid in a convertible. Even in brief moments like this idiosyncrasies captivate. The perfectly titlee "billie bosa nova" pulls off it's name sake genre without losing her specific sound to a wonderful result followed by the jazzy "my future" which we'd had a year to cherish. Then the sensual "bad guy" sequel,"Oxytocin " slips in describing something so passionate it can only be sinful as religous imagery is utilized to express the forbidden allure (love the female pronoun for god btw great call back to ATGGGTH)
The carnal "oxytocin " is washed away by the angelic "GOLDWING" where her layered choral vocals sing a paraphrase verse from a sacred Hindu poem. It seems to be about seeking anonymity despite being a celestial being(re:star)one of her best lyrics so far. The chill "stripped back" "Lost Cause" sounds fuller in the context of the project and is a breath of fresh air before the second half of the record (track 8 in a 16 track record)shifts not only the themes but the sound into pure trauma . The doe eyed "Halleys Comet " laments a toxic doomed romance without throwing blame before ending in blissless ignorance. She is so aware of herself that it's like you're watching a well written movie with no perspective neglected. The inclusion of the tour interlude is the only and greatest misstep (2 me, it might grow or seem endearing ) but it feels too long. It should've been shortened. But if that interlude (it's 3:47min long!)discouraged you you won't feel that for long. The sonic salad that is "OverHeated" is a radio ready hit. Like many artists rising post 2013 you can feel Lorde or Lana del Reys influence and that is never as overstated than "OverHeated " which sounds like a sequel to "Sober" from "Melodrama ". It's amazing how she channels her muses even in the quite closer "Male Fantasy " where Lana's ghost basically harmonizes with her while she uses third person narratives as outlets for her own self destructive tendencies. It's such a sincere song it cuts tears from your eyes. The "Liability "-esque "Everybody Dies" takes a nihilistic dogma and makes it a point of distress. Immortality seems scary under this songs gaze as it means eternal vacancy, grief&love. I love the self reflective admission to her stunted maturity due to fame("i sure have a knack for acting like a child ") Are musicians even allowed to be this honest?

While I am not a huge fan of Billie Eilish, this new album shows areas of remarkable growth lyrically and vocally over her previous album, which was very hit and miss for me. FINNEAS also kills it on this album with the production and quality track transitions. The singles gave a taste of the album, but I am glad she saved the best for the album. Many tracks on here stick to Billie’s signature way of talk singing seen on her previous album, which isn’t necessarily bad as they do transcend, at least for me, those tracks for the most part. Lastly, why couldn’t the spoken track, “Not My Responsibility,” be a sung track? Solid album though. “Getting Older” discusses the deranged strangers that seem to be always knocking on her door, the difficulty of healing, and how things once loved can fade. “Haley’s Comet” is a beautiful dreamy love song that has her wondering what she is going to do since she fell in love. “Everybody Dies” addresses mortality, the problem of the idea of immortality, being alone, wondering why death must be and when your own turn will be, and how you really aren’t alone. This album starts off underwhelming. The first two tracks are bland and sound lazily produced. I don't mind minimal beats, but these sound too minimal. This is surprising coming from a producer like Finneas who is known for adding layers upon layers of sounds and vocals. The first track is extremely simple, which is in my opinion not good for an opening track. However, the lyrics on these first two tracks are great.

As we get towards the middle of the album, things start to pick up. We hear "my future" which is a beautiful showcase of Billie's vocal ability and the versatility of her musical style. We then hear "Oxytocin" which is a hard hitting song with catchy verses and incredibly unique, almost EDM like production from Finneas. "GOLDWING" starts off with a beautiful choir-like layered vocals with a clean beat switch. However, I think when Billie comes in on the beat switch her flow is very underwhelming and nothing that really catches my attention. The song does get a bit better as we go on, though. The last song I really enjoyed from this section of the album is "Halley's Comet". This is an emotional song that includes a beautiful piano with BIllie's signature soft vocals. It's a wonderful, relaxing, soothing track.

Near the end of the album are some of my favorites. The lyrics on "Your Power" hit hard, and so do Billie's vocals. She showcases her incredible vocal range and ability on this track, and it gives me goosebumps. "Happier Than Ever" is definitely a notable track. The slow, dreamy start is wonderful but the sort of rock beat switch near the middle is incredible and Finneas really just hit it home with this one.

The last track is simple, but not boring simple. The songwriting is amazing and keeps you wanting to hear more. BIllie's vocals on this are emotional and soft.

This album in conclusion was just good. I feel like her freshman album had less underwhelming production. If you compare this album to that album production wise, you can see how incredible the production is on her freshman album compared to her sophomore album, with there being so many less yawn-worthy tracks on the freshman album. Nearly every song on her freshman album keeps you hooked. However, lyrically, this album I'd say is a bit better, and the lyrics are very personal and take a dive into her fame ridden lifestyle.

"AIThis album is full of solid tracks but songs like "Everybody Dies" feels musically under developed which is disappointing considering the subject matter and lyrics. The opening track "Getting Older" feels like an ode to previous work Eilish has done but as an opener is lack luster and unfortunately isn't followed up with anything quite energizing enough to get the album off the ground. "AI Didn't Change My Number" is ear catching but fails to go anywhere musically or lyrically. Her single "my future" is the another ode to young Billie but unlike "Getting Older," "my future" is engaging and fun. The song brings a needed energy into the album with its lofi beat. "Oxytocin" is a fun dancy tune that picks up the album for a nice four song run through "GOLDWING", "Lost Cause", and "Halley's Comet." "Lost Cause" another single off the album is well done and sets the tone for a more adult Eilish. "Halley's Comet" is the introspective ballad that Eilish has learned to do so well. With the air of a 50's jazz singer Billie captures a whole vibe here. "Not My Responsibility" is Eilish's poem on body positivity and misogyny. This author hopes that her music will speak for itself instead of people needing to see what clothes she wears. The next two songs "Overheated" and "Everybody Dies" are forgettable but lead to a pleasing climax of the album. "Your Power", "NDA", and "Therefore I am" have a strong finish for the album. The transition between "NDA" and "Therefore I Am" is particularly satisfying. One hopes Finneas will continue to experiment with new production and mixing methods as the Eilish brand grows. "The title track "Happier Than Ever" is the apex of the album as it encompasses the soft sing-songy young Eilish we all fell in love with and the new more grown up rightly angry Billie that rears her beautiful head in the 2nd verse of the song. The closing track "Male Fantasy" is a very self-reflective track that sees Billie grapple with love, loss, and the pain that is found throughout relationships. Overall Eilish's sophomore album is a strong addition to her catalog and shows that she isn't afraid to grow and play with people's idea of who she is as an artist and as a person. Expand
