"Pale Emperor" was such a surprise after several lackluster albums in a row. Manson came out of nowhere and released a solid album that held up to any of his classic albums. Every song was catchy and immediate on that album. Unfortunately "Heaven Upside Down" doesn't quite live up to that level of quality. The production and lyrical content is similar, it essentially sounds like disc 2 of"Pale Emperor" was such a surprise after several lackluster albums in a row. The production and lyrical content is similar, it essentially sounds like disc 2 of Pale Emperor, but the songs don't grab you the same way. There are a lot of slow plodding electronic beats and a lack of real acoustic drums. Some songs stand out like "Say10" and "We Know Where You F###in Live", "Blood Honey", but there is more filler on this album overall. Pale Emperor was a 9/10, Heaven Upside Down is more like a 6/10. It seems to be more of a grower. Expand

I've never been huge on Marilyn Manson, but I gotta admit this is a tad bit disappointing. While the album is well produced, even if it is a tad bit polished, there really is no teeth to it. Nothing all that biting about Manson's sound and even his lyrics, which is supposed to be more political but doesn't get as far as his older songs like the Beautiful People, just seems more like aI've never been huge on Marilyn Manson, but I gotta admit this is a tad bit disappointing. Nothing all that biting about Manson's sound and even his lyrics, which is supposed to be more political but doesn't get as far as his older songs like the Beautiful People, just seems more like a super safe and tame approach at his sound, especially considering that so many other artists are doing what he is doing, both now and even before. I wouldn't say that this is bad, there are a few songs here that work for me like WE KNOW WHERE YOU **** LIVE and Saturnalia, but honestly there isn't a lot for me to return to. Expand

Manson at his worst. The instrumentals are great but the songwriting is really bad in tracks like Tattooed In Reverse and SAY10 (just to name a few), and sometimes it gets immature - e.g.g. KILL4ME.

Although there are a couple forever classic tracks on Heaven Upside Down, the other eight mostly fail to deliver Marilyn Manson's old rock vibes and instead just give out black noise.

Manson’s nihilistic take on 2017 is interwoven with glimpses of personal darkness, wrapped up in mutually constrictive and damaging relationships on epic dirge Blood Honey and the closing Threats Of Romance, ordering a partner to do his murderous bidding on the Muse disco blues Kill4Me, and mourning the loss of his father on the seven-minute centrepiece Saturnalia. But even here there’s a renewed crackle to Manson’s attack--a viper regaining its bite.

Heaven Upside Down betters that record [2015's The Pale Emperor]. [14 Oct 2017, p.50]

On Heaven Upside Down, his 10th album, Manson embraces the tropes that made him a menace and a rock star and a stalwart of goth.
