  • Summary: The actor/singer/songwriter (and father of recording artists Martha and Rufus) is joined by Bill Frisell (and others) on his first disc in five years.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 6 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. Once his political songs fell flat because he wasn't scared or angry enough. Now when he's a shit you wonder why you should care--which is kind of hip-hop, don't you think?--but Bush has him so scared and angry he makes up for it, with a dedicated posse of El Lay studio vets getting in their licks.
  2. Paste Magazine

Throughout the disc, a dream band backs him up... providing rich atmosphere and detail to his songs. [#16, p.129]
  3. Mojo
    80
Backed by an ace band... he's back in familiar territory. [May 2005, p.109]
  4. Q Magazine
    70
A welcome change of gear. [Jun 2005, p.118]
  5. Uncut
    70
The lyrical balance of wit and poignancy is still here... plus stronger melodies than we've heard from him in some time. [May 2005, p.96]
  6. Blender
    60
A band of arty studio veterans give him a new set of choppers, and he knows what to do with them. [Jun 2005, p.116]
  7. Wainwright may still be a pacifist; he's a clever enough lyricist to give to give his words more than one meaning, but he's outwardly aggressive whether his subject is war, family, love, or contemporary society.

Good but not great. Worth it for a few Loudo gems and the crack band. "Last Man on Earth" is much better.

Although I have not heard every one of Loudon's albums, this one made me think he has lost his muse or he isn't even trying Although I have not heard every one of Loudon's albums, this one made me think he has lost his muse or he isn't even trying anymore. It's hard for me to believe that he liked these songs. Collapse
