    Sadistically fun. [#60, p.97]

Hocus Pocus is comprised of simple, beautiful songs, humbly Enon with all aspects of their trademark bite of irony, sarcasm, fondness and regret. [#5, p.101]
  4. Their fizzy confections still bristle with the same unfettered enthusiasm for retro kitsch, only now they come wrapped in a timeless pop sheen and confetti-sprinkled sharpness that's as inscrutable as it is enchanting.

Yasuda provides most of the brightest moments with a new wave/elecro style that wrings real delight from revelling in pop art/trash. [Oct 2003, p.116]

These tunes sound like they're built out of yard-sale detritus, salvaged and held together with masking tape, chewing gum, anger and sentimentality. [Nov 2003, p.112]
  7. Swings like a pendulum from playful dance beats, cutesy female vocals and spacey synth effects to feedback-drenched, guitar-heavy rock fronted by a raspy male singer. And it does so with such affection that the unique power of their contagious, inventive sounds cannot be denied.

If Enon were magicians, their crowd-gasping finale would be sawing in half the expectations of what a nu-New york band should sound like. [Oct 2003, p.122]
  9. While they still manage to skronk out with the best of ‘em, Hocus Pocus is still a little too mixed up, eclectic, unfocused, and, at some points, a little boring.
  10. If you can make it past the album's frustrating layout, Hocus Pocus proves a fine collection of songs by pretty much anyone's standards.
  11. ‘Hocus Pocus’ is a tricky record to listen to and it’s twisted roots of songs are unlikely to win the band much more than a cult following.

Easily their poorest album, the whole thing just sounds rushed and tossed off...why, Enon, why??

unfortunatly the fun and tough songwriting talents of shmersal are pushed aside as yasuda gets too much front time. Comparable to the rest of unfortunatly the fun and tough songwriting talents of shmersal are pushed aside as yasuda gets too much front time. Comparable to the rest of the Enon full releases, Hocus-Pocus is a step backward. Full Review »
