Versatility is Hot Pink's biggest asset, but it definitely delivers in various other areas as well. Polished, playful, and thoughtful. Outstanding pop album, all tracks could easily pass as singles. Doja is one of the brightest stars of the current musical scene, and I look forward to more of her soon. Planet Her 2021.

Doja Cat is a very versatile artist. In this album alone she throws in genres of pop, r&b, afro, soft rock, soul, disco, hip-hop, trap, and more. This album took so long to grow on me. Listening to it now in contrast of Planet Her, I love it. Over half of this album is hit after hit. Almost every song went viral on TikTok. The production on here is diverse, but the mixing could've been better. A classic album.

Even though Doja Cat identifies herself as a rapper, I personally see her as one of the biggest promises of the pop music industry. Her second studio album "Hot Pink" is very correct, nice, pleasury, cute and cohesive, not because of its aesthetic but due to its sound. The music in her newest album is good, quite basic, but very enjoyable. Her voice in it is also very interesting, smooth and calmed which does not adjoin her rapper etiqueta since American rap and hip-hop (without mattering if its sung by a male or a female) has always been dominated by raspy kind-of aggressive voices. Hers, nevertheless, is characterized by its cuteness and huge ability to harmonise. If this attribute is accompanied with a good producer, every Doja Cat project could be a five-star one. In this project, however, even though all this facts are included, it feels like something is missing and I truly don't know what it is. It may be its bubblegum sound or its let me say, lack of artisty, I don't know.
In conclusion, "Hot Pink" is an incredibly catchy pop/rap album. From the pop tracks to the more rap tracks, Doja Cat comes through with great flows and melodies. The production is amazing and I love the versatility and variety of Doja on this album. Her resemblance to Nicki Minaj is scary at points, but quite like it. This resemblance, attraction to the public and the modern way it has come to our life (considering it became famous through Tik Tok and ended up earning a number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 and almost worldwide) may be the first step to reshape the new music royalty genealogical tree and a pioneer way of publishing and promoting music.

Doja Cat's sophomore studio album proves itself to be one of the greatest female rap albums of all time. She takes inspiration from many legends and adds her own spin on it to create something authentic and unique to her style. There are some missteps, but as a whole I believe the entire album has an amazing flow and she can spit her raps very well while holding her own in vocal runs. “Hot Pink”debuted with 19k copies back in Nov. 2019. It’s now closing in on or has passed 400k units as of April. That's a 21x multiplier (or 2100% growth). Obviously an album has to have SOMETHING to have this longevity in 2020. Here are the things that work for Hot Pink:

Versatility - Hot Pink is rooted in Hip Hop/R&B influences, but finds ways to make a lane of its own. The album is vibrant, sonically varied, and genre bending - anchored by an unforgettable performance by Doja throughout the album. The result is a surprisingly cohesive set of songs that barely sound like each other. What genre is "Won't Bite"? What genre is "Botton **** Sure, Doja uses trendy sounds, but she has a way of making them her own through confident delivery, similar to DaBaby.

Pacing/Layout - Props Doja Cat and team for making an album of reasonable length. 12 tracks, 40 minutes. The first three tracks (Cyber Sex, Won’t Bite, Rules) are very successful songs as far as setting the tone for the album (being energetic, lavishly produced, and very in your face)The 4th song, "Bottom **** is like a bridge between the introduction of the album and the remaining 8 tracks, which are generally chill, even the club banger "Like That" (type of song you hear at the club, found a shawty, she's dancing on you). Pretty much every song on this album sounds better in context (played in order), and that forces you to listen to the entire thing.

Personality - You already know about Doja Cat’s personality. She’s funny, she's sexy. She has a confident, noticeable voice - kind of like the drunk hot girls at the club. Her delivery is strongest on songs like “Won’t Bite”, “Bottom **** “Addiction”, “Shine” and “Better than Me”.

Her "Sexy, goofy, corny" may affect her reachability, but that's only because I've never seen a female rapper like Doja. Most female rappers are sex symbols, and choose to withhold any amount of personality unless it relates to their bodies. Considering we're in the time of the Simp/Incel movement, it’ll be interesting to see how SoundCloud/Emo rap fans react to Doja. Simps and Incels can't imagine getting a Nicki Minaj, or Meg Thee Stallion, but Doja Cat at least seems more approachable. Her dating that skinny White guy made her seem more down to Earth. I included all of this because if you know Doja Cat’s public persona, these topics may cross your mind while you listen to Hot Pink - maybe not the “Simp/Incel” part lmaoo.

Sex Appeal - I think about having sex while listening to this album. That's always going to bring people back.

    SOME THINGS THAT DON’T WORK:

Subject Matter: While the album is SONICALLY varied, there isn’t much going on with this album as far as content. I gave it a 7 - 8, so clearly it doesn’t break the experience for me. I could say with better content, Hot Pink would be an 8 - 9, but I also said I like this album because it makes me think of sex. Still, the content on this album amounts to a girl’s wet dream.

“Talk Dirty”: This song ain’t it. Maybe I need to play it during sex to get it.

“All of the body-oddy ass & **** - “Say So” is a bop, but this is a lazy way to end a good verse; borderline disgraceful. That second verse was heating up and she’s ends it with that weakness. Song is hot and it’s Top 10 so whatever, it just seems like sometimes mainstream artists take their spot for granted. You’re not in your basement anymore, finish a verse and finish it strong.

    CONCLUSION

Overall, Doja Cat’s “Hot Pink” is an exciting step forward for mainstream music this decade. Many people know that if you want to become mainstream in anything, you must give the people something they have already seen before, with a unique enough twist for hypebeasts to call you “different”. This album and Doja Cat overall personifies that.

Hot Pink will end 2020 with well over 1 million copies sold. Growing from 19k first week to a platinum plaque is not easy, even with streaming. Its success is attributed to the arsenal of possible singles. I remember Anthony Fantano saying something along the lines of “every song tries to be a hit”, but for a handful of tracks…I don’t think they’re trying. Granted, I don’t consume close to 1% of the music Fantano does.

This isn’t a perfect album, nor does it try to be. Like a girl or boy that knows they’re a 7 or 8, and doesn’t try to overcompensate for it - and that makes you even more into them. This album has no problem being about sex and money, and…yeah that’s about it. But it takes those two or three subjects and makes the best out of them.

    Final Score: 7.6/10
Favs: Cyber Sex, Bottom **** Addiction, Shine
Worst: easily Talk Dirty, and the last line of Say So’s second verse

Simply said, the album itself is already complete, achieving every possible sound and showing Doja Cat’s pure flexibility and versatility on virtually any beat. Cyber Sex is funky and a joy to listen to. Rules displays Doja Cat’s pure bar-power as she spits co-written lyrics. Tracks such as Addiction and Say So provide danceability and head-banging energy. Streets’ incomparable sexiness is a principle track for all bedrooms with a good sound system. Hot Pink is a staple in clubs and post-club car-rides home. Expand

Hot Pink is impeccable, amazing. Doja Cat really shows who is her as an artist by rapping and singing at the same time.

So sexy is an amazing album, so aesthetic beauty vocals , amazing music videos this album. I feel like my first listen through was very similar to her but on my second I fell in LOVE with almost every single song. I love EVERY SONG on the album.

Not everything on Hot Pink is a knockout, but the experimentation results in some amazing standouts and other songs that are still fun or intriguing, even if they're not as memorable.

“Hot Pink” doesn’t show an evolution of Doja Cat artistically or musically. The production from the likes of Tyson Trax, Yeti Beats and even the famed Saleem Remi is as slick as her debut, but also just as saccharine as her debut.

Though there are moments where a new tone or inflection runs the risk that Doja might be mistaken for someone else, the album’s anchor in her R&B and soul background creates a tender space for her to stack and reveal her layers. Hot Pink doesn’t demand that Doja figure out the totality of her sound right now.
